Engaging in sexual intercourse twice consecutively?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask, I had intercourse with my girlfriend while wearing a condom the entire time, and after withdrawal, I ejaculated.
Immediately after, I went to the bathroom to clean up, and we both used the restroom and wiped our important areas clean.
We also washed our hands with body wash twice.
About five minutes later, we wanted to engage again, so we had intercourse again, this time also using a condom throughout (and again withdrawing before ejaculation).
However, when putting on a new condom, my fingers touched the glans and foreskin.
My question is, could there be residual semen on the outside of the condom? Is there a risk of pregnancy?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the failure rate of using condoms as a contraceptive method is over 5%, which is less reliable compared to other methods.
Therefore, it is generally not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
If your menstrual period is more than a week late, it is advisable to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When it comes to the question of whether pregnancy can occur after two consecutive intercourse sessions, particularly with the precautions you've described, it's essential to understand the mechanics of conception and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods.
First, let's clarify the scenario. You mentioned that during both intercourse sessions, you used condoms throughout, which is one of the most effective methods of contraception when used correctly. Condoms not only prevent the sperm from reaching the egg but also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The key points to consider in your situation are:
1. Condom Integrity: If the condoms were used correctly and did not break or slip off during intercourse, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced. It's crucial to check the condom for any damage before use and to ensure that it is put on properly.
2. Timing of Intercourse: Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, but for conception to occur, sperm must meet an egg during the ovulation period. If your partner is not ovulating, the chances of pregnancy are minimal, regardless of the timing of intercourse.
3. Residual Semen: You expressed concern about whether semen could remain on the outside of the condom after the first session. While it is possible for some semen to be on the outside of the condom, if you used a new condom for the second session and ensured that your hands were clean, the risk of transferring sperm from the outside of the first condom to the new one is very low. However, it is always advisable to wash hands thoroughly before handling a new condom to minimize any risk.
4. Withdrawal Method: You mentioned that you withdrew before ejaculation during both sessions. While this method can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. Pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, so relying solely on withdrawal is not recommended if you are trying to avoid pregnancy.
5. Post-Intercourse Actions: After intercourse, going to the bathroom and cleaning up is a good practice for hygiene, but it does not affect the likelihood of pregnancy if the condom was used correctly.
In summary, if both sessions involved the correct use of condoms and there was no breakage or slippage, the chances of pregnancy are very low. However, if you or your partner have concerns about potential pregnancy or contraceptive effectiveness, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to discuss additional contraceptive options if desired.
Lastly, if there is any uncertainty or if your partner experiences any unusual symptoms, it is always wise to take a pregnancy test or consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. Understanding your reproductive health and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods can help you make informed decisions moving forward.
