Post-Operative Concerns After Circumcision: Showering Guidelines and Pain Management - Urology

Postoperative issues

Hello Doctor, I am on the 9th day post-circumcision.
The glans is still somewhat sensitive and painful, and the swelling around the area does not seem to have decreased.
The suture area feels a bit hard and often gets caught on the gauze, causing pain.
I would like to ask if it is okay to take a shower in this situation.
If I can shower, is it acceptable to just rinse without using soap or body wash on that area? Also, is it okay if my hair and body come into contact with the surgical area while washing? Thank you very much for your help!

Hello: If the wound is not red, it is okay to get it wet, but it should be cleaned properly and dried before disinfecting.
If you are concerned about inflammation, it is better to use a sponge bath method.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

After undergoing circumcision, it is common to experience some sensitivity and discomfort in the glans (the head of the penis) for a period of time post-surgery. The presence of swelling and the feeling of tightness around the sutures can also contribute to discomfort. Here are some guidelines and recommendations for managing pain and showering after circumcision.

Showering Guidelines
1. Timing: Generally, you can shower 24 to 48 hours after the surgery, but it is essential to follow your surgeon's specific instructions. If your doctor has advised you to wait longer, please adhere to that guidance.

2. Water Temperature: Use lukewarm water for your showers. Hot water can exacerbate swelling and discomfort, while cold water may not be soothing.

3. Gentle Cleaning: When showering, it is advisable to let the water gently run over the area. Avoid direct pressure or scrubbing on the surgical site. You do not need to use soap directly on the area; just allow the water to cleanse it naturally. If you feel comfortable, you can use a mild, unscented soap around the area, but be cautious not to irritate the sensitive skin.

4. Avoiding Irritation: Be careful when washing your hair and body to avoid accidentally bumping or touching the surgical site. If you are concerned about the area getting wet, you can use a waterproof cover or a plastic bag to protect it during the shower.

5. Drying: After showering, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing, as this can cause irritation and pain.

Pain Management
1. Pain Relief Medications: If you are experiencing significant pain, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be effective. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packaging or those provided by your healthcare provider.

2. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Make sure to wrap ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin, which can cause frostbite.

3. Rest and Elevation: Resting and keeping the area elevated can help reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous activities that may aggravate the area.

4. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice increased swelling, redness, or discharge, or if the pain worsens, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider. These could be signs of infection or complications.

5. Follow-Up Care: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They will assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.

Conclusion
It is normal to experience some discomfort and sensitivity after circumcision, and proper care during the healing process is crucial. Showering can be done safely with the right precautions, and managing pain effectively will help improve your comfort. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your recovery is important, and ensuring you follow the right steps will help you heal effectively.
