Teeth with yellow spots?
Hello Dr.
Lin,
I visited the dentist today for a teeth cleaning.
After returning home and checking my teeth in the mirror, I noticed some yellow spots on the last tooth (second molar) on both sides of my upper jaw.
There are also some on my lower teeth, but they are more noticeable on the upper teeth, and I can't remove them by scraping with my finger.
I would like to ask Dr.
Lin:
1.
What are these yellow spots on my teeth?
2.
Why were these yellow spots not removed during the teeth cleaning?
3.
Do these yellow spots need to be removed? If so, how should they be removed?
4.
Do these yellow spots have any impact on the health of my teeth?
Thank you, Dr.
Lin.

Hello: The yellow spots on your teeth could be due to various conditions such as dental calculus, food staining, enamel demineralization or hypoplasia, cavities, dental fluorosis, or tetracycline staining, among others.
Each cause has a different treatment approach.
It is advisable to discuss with the dentist who has examined the spots before deciding on the most appropriate and safe course of action.
Thank you!

Yellow stains on teeth can be a common concern for many individuals, and understanding their causes, treatment options, and potential health impacts is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene and overall dental health.
1. What are these yellow stains on teeth?
Yellow stains on teeth can arise from various sources. They may be due to extrinsic factors, such as food and drink consumption (e.g., coffee, tea, red wine), tobacco use, or poor oral hygiene leading to plaque buildup. Intrinsic factors can also contribute, including the use of certain medications (like tetracycline during tooth development), excessive fluoride exposure, or dental conditions that affect enamel formation. In your case, the yellow stains you observed could be a combination of these factors, particularly if they are not removable by brushing.
2. Why couldn't the dental cleaning remove these yellow stains?
Professional dental cleanings are effective in removing plaque and tartar (calculus) but may not always eliminate intrinsic stains or discoloration that is embedded within the tooth structure. If the stains are due to enamel erosion or intrinsic factors, they may require more specialized treatments, such as whitening procedures or restorative dentistry. Additionally, if the stains are related to dental conditions like fluorosis or tetracycline staining, they may not respond to traditional cleaning methods.
3. Is it necessary to remove these yellow stains? If so, how?
Whether or not to remove yellow stains depends on their cause and your personal aesthetic preferences. If the stains are primarily cosmetic and do not indicate underlying dental issues, you may choose to leave them. However, if they are a sign of decay or other dental problems, it is crucial to address them. Treatment options include professional whitening treatments, dental bonding, or veneers for more severe discoloration. Consulting with your dentist will help determine the best course of action based on the specific characteristics of your stains.
4. Do these yellow stains affect dental health?
Yellow stains themselves may not directly harm dental health, but they can be indicative of underlying issues. For example, if the stains are due to plaque buildup, they can lead to gum disease or cavities if not addressed. Additionally, if the stains are a result of enamel erosion, this can increase the risk of tooth sensitivity and decay. Therefore, while the stains may not pose an immediate health risk, they can be a sign of poor oral hygiene or other dental conditions that warrant attention.
In summary, yellow stains on teeth can result from various factors, including dietary habits, oral hygiene practices, and intrinsic dental conditions. While professional cleanings can help with extrinsic stains, intrinsic stains may require more specialized treatments. It is essential to consult with a dentist to assess the nature of the stains and determine the most appropriate treatment options. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, can help prevent the formation of stains and promote overall dental health.
