Menstrual issues
Hello, doctor.
I had my wisdom teeth extracted on January 23 and received two injections of anesthesia.
I took antibiotics and painkillers for several days afterward.
My menstrual cycle has been regular, and I was supposed to get my period on January 26, but it hasn't arrived.
I continued taking antibiotics until January 28.
Could the antibiotics have affected my cycle? I had unprotected sexual intercourse from January 26 to January 28, but there was no ejaculation inside.
My period is now six days late.
Could the medication have an impact? Is there a possibility of pregnancy?
Ruru, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/02/01

Antibiotics do not affect fertility, so the chances of getting pregnant are not significantly impacted.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding menstrual delays, especially in the context of recent dental procedures, antibiotic use, and potential pregnancy, there are several factors to consider.
Firstly, it’s important to note that antibiotics, while they can have various side effects, typically do not directly cause menstrual delays. However, they can influence the menstrual cycle indirectly. For instance, stress from dental procedures, pain, and the body’s response to infection can all contribute to hormonal fluctuations that may delay menstruation. In your case, the combination of dental surgery, the use of local anesthesia, and the subsequent stress and recovery could be significant factors affecting your cycle.
Regarding the antibiotics you took, most commonly prescribed antibiotics do not have a known effect on menstrual cycles. However, certain antibiotics can interact with hormonal contraceptives, potentially reducing their effectiveness, which could lead to unintended pregnancy if you were relying on them for birth control. Since you mentioned having unprotected intercourse during the time you were taking antibiotics, it is indeed possible that you could be pregnant, especially since your period is now delayed by six days.
In terms of the medications you took for pain management, many over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, are generally considered safe during menstruation and do not typically affect menstrual cycles. However, if you were prescribed a stronger pain medication, it would be wise to consult with your healthcare provider about its potential effects.
Given that your menstrual cycle is usually regular, a delay of six days is noteworthy. It is advisable to take a home pregnancy test to determine if you are pregnant. These tests are quite sensitive and can provide reliable results even a few days after a missed period. If the test is positive, or if you continue to experience delays or other symptoms, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, while antibiotics and pain medications are unlikely to be the direct cause of your menstrual delay, the stress and physical changes from your dental procedure could be contributing factors. Additionally, given the timing of your sexual activity, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Taking a pregnancy test and consulting with your healthcare provider will provide clarity and help you understand the next steps to take. Remember, it’s always best to discuss any concerns about medications and their effects on your health with a qualified healthcare professional.
