Feeling of ear blockage?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, after cleaning my ears, I have been feeling a sensation of blockage in my left ear.
At first, I felt relief when I burped, but then it went away.
What could this symptom be, and will it resolve on its own? Thank you, doctor, and Happy New Year!

Hello: It may be related to earwax impaction or Eustachian tube dysfunction.
If symptoms persist without improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation for confirmation.
Wishing you safety and good health.

Ear congestion can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, often characterized by a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear. This sensation can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in finding effective remedies for relief.
One common cause of ear congestion is the accumulation of earwax (cerumen). When you clean your ears, especially with cotton swabs or other objects, you may inadvertently push wax deeper into the ear canal, leading to a blockage. This can result in a feeling of fullness, muffled hearing, and sometimes even tinnitus (ringing in the ears). If you suspect earwax buildup, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional who can safely remove the wax using specialized tools.
Another potential cause of ear congestion is Eustachian tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. Factors such as allergies, colds, sinus infections, or changes in altitude can cause the Eustachian tube to become blocked or fail to open properly. This can lead to a sensation of pressure or fullness in the ear, and you may experience relief by yawning, swallowing, or gently blowing your nose while pinching your nostrils (known as the Valsalva maneuver). However, if these methods do not provide relief, it may be necessary to seek medical advice.
In your case, you mentioned that the feeling of congestion in your left ear initially improved with burping but then returned. This could indicate that the Eustachian tube is intermittently functioning, which is not uncommon. If the sensation persists or worsens, it is essential to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including hearing tests and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In some instances, ear congestion can be related to sinus issues or allergies. If you have a history of sinus problems or seasonal allergies, these could contribute to your symptoms. Over-the-counter antihistamines or decongestants may provide relief if allergies are the culprit. Additionally, nasal saline sprays or rinses can help clear nasal passages and promote Eustachian tube function.
If you experience any accompanying symptoms such as severe pain, fever, or discharge from the ear, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly, as these could indicate an infection or other serious condition.
In summary, ear congestion can result from various factors, including earwax buildup, Eustachian tube dysfunction, sinus issues, or allergies. While some cases may resolve on their own, persistent symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment. Remember to avoid inserting objects into your ears and consider using safer methods for ear cleaning, such as over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften earwax. Wishing you a speedy recovery and a happy new year!
