Right chest pain?

I started experiencing pain inside when taking deep breaths and changing positions a week ago.
Now, even my upper right back hurts during those movements, but the pain only occurs while moving.
What could be the issue?

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology

Hello: If there are no obvious symptoms such as cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath, and it feels more like chest or rib nerve pain, relaxing, engaging in moderate exercise, getting adequate sleep, and reducing the intake of cold beverages should help improve the condition.

Understanding right chest pain can be quite complex, as it can stem from a variety of causes, some of which may be benign while others could indicate a more serious condition. Given your symptoms of pain during deep breathing and movement, it is essential to consider several potential causes.

One common cause of right-sided chest pain, especially when associated with movement or deep breathing, is musculoskeletal in nature. This could involve strain or injury to the muscles, ligaments, or cartilage in the chest wall. Conditions such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can lead to localized pain that worsens with certain movements or deep breaths. Similarly, muscle strain from physical activity or poor posture can also result in discomfort in the chest and upper back.

Another possibility is that the pain could be related to the thoracic spine or the nerves that emerge from the spinal cord in that region. Conditions such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis can cause referred pain to the chest area, especially if there is nerve involvement. This type of pain may be exacerbated by certain movements or positions, leading to discomfort during activities like deep breathing or twisting.

It is also important to consider the possibility of pleuritic pain, which occurs when the pleura (the lining around the lungs) becomes inflamed. This can happen due to infections, such as pneumonia or pleurisy, and is typically sharp and worsens with breathing or coughing. If you are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, such as a cough, fever, or shortness of breath, it would be prudent to seek medical attention.

In some cases, right-sided chest pain can be related to gastrointestinal issues, such as acid reflux or gallbladder problems. These conditions can sometimes present with pain that mimics cardiac issues, so it is crucial to evaluate the nature of the pain and any accompanying symptoms.

Given that your pain has progressed to include the upper back and is associated with specific movements, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to assess for any underlying structural issues, as well as a physical examination to determine the source of the pain.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for your right chest pain, including musculoskeletal issues, nerve involvement, pleuritic pain, or gastrointestinal problems, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions. Early intervention can help manage symptoms effectively and prevent further complications. If the pain worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, or severe discomfort, do not hesitate to seek emergency medical care.
