Post-Abortion Issues
I would like to ask, after using medication for a medical abortion on December 26, I experienced bleeding until mid-January.
However, there was over a week of brownish blood that was just a few drops.
I returned to the clinic and confirmed that the embryo had been expelled; an ultrasound showed there were still some blood clots.
I then took medication for three more days and did not return for another ultrasound.
As of February 5, my period has not yet arrived.
Is this normal?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause intermenstrual bleeding are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist if symptoms persist or worsen to determine if there is a hormonal imbalance or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info
After an abortion, it is common for women to experience a range of physical and emotional changes, including delayed menstruation. In your case, you mentioned that you underwent a medical abortion on December 26, and you experienced bleeding until mid-January, followed by a week of brownish discharge. You also confirmed with your clinic that the embryo had been expelled and that there were still some blood clots present, for which you took additional medication.
It is important to understand that the menstrual cycle can be affected by various factors after an abortion. The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and the subsequent abortion can lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. It is not uncommon for menstruation to be delayed for several weeks or even months following an abortion, especially if the abortion was recent.
Typically, after a medical abortion, most women will have their first period within four to six weeks. However, this can vary significantly from person to person. Factors that can influence the timing of your next period include:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: After an abortion, your body needs time to adjust and return to its normal hormonal balance. This adjustment period can lead to delays in ovulation and menstruation.
2. Stress and Emotional Well-being: The emotional impact of an abortion can also affect your menstrual cycle. Stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay your period.
3. Physical Recovery: Your body may still be in the process of healing from the abortion, which can also affect your menstrual cycle.
4. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can also contribute to delayed menstruation.
Given that you have not had your period by February 5, it is advisable to monitor your situation closely. If your period does not return within a few weeks, or if you experience any concerning symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection (such as fever or foul-smelling discharge), it is important to consult your healthcare provider. They may recommend a follow-up examination or tests to ensure that there are no complications, such as retained products of conception or hormonal imbalances.
In summary, while a delayed period after an abortion can be normal, it is essential to stay vigilant about your health. If you have any concerns or if your situation does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and support. They can provide you with the necessary guidance and reassurance during your recovery process.
