Genital itching

There are red spots on the inner thighs, one on each side, which are not itchy.
After having sexual intercourse with my wife, the next day after work, I felt a slight intermittent itch in the genital area.
Could this be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection?

Azhong, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/02/07

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: If there is itching in the urethra, it may indicate inflammation, and you should seek medical attention.
If the irritation is on the skin, please keep the area clean and dry, and monitor to see if it returns to normal.
Wishing you good health.

Genital itching can indeed be a concerning symptom, especially when it follows sexual activity. However, it is important to understand that itching in the genital area can be caused by a variety of factors, and not all of them are related to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Firstly, the presence of red spots on the inner thighs, along with intermittent itching in the genital area, could suggest several possibilities. These may include:
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, skin irritation can occur due to various reasons such as soaps, detergents, or even fabrics that come into contact with the skin. If you have recently changed any personal care products or laundry detergents, this could be a potential cause.

2. Fungal Infections: Conditions like jock itch (tinea cruris) are common in the groin area and can cause itching and redness. This type of infection is not necessarily sexually transmitted but can be exacerbated by moisture and heat.

3. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial vaginosis or other bacterial infections can lead to itching and discomfort. While these are more common in women, men can also experience similar symptoms.

4. STDs: Certain sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes, gonorrhea, or chlamydia, can present with symptoms that include itching, redness, and discomfort in the genital area. However, these infections often come with additional symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain during urination, or sores.

5. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area and lead to itching and irritation.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may conduct a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. If an STD is suspected, appropriate tests can be performed to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the genital area clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid harsh chemicals.

- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from potential irritants such as scented lotions, powders, or tight clothing that may exacerbate the itching.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may arise, such as changes in discharge, pain, or the appearance of sores.

In conclusion, while genital itching can be a sign of STDs, it is not exclusively so. The symptoms you are experiencing could stem from a variety of causes, and a healthcare provider will be best equipped to help you determine the exact nature of your condition. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential issues effectively.
