Pearly penile papules?

Hello Dr.
Du, last Tuesday I noticed a small bump at the base of my penis, about 0.2 cm in size.
I have no sexual experience.
It ruptured while I was showering on Thursday, and the discharge was similar to that of a pimple on my face.
I squeezed out the blood and white discharge, but I might not have cleaned it properly.
On the third day, there was a scab and white pus.
After showering, the scab and pus broke open, and when I wiped it with tissue, I found a small white spot similar to a pimple on my face.
Today is the fourth day, and it seems to be healing, with just a little white pus left, which also ruptured after my shower.
I have been disinfecting it with iodine.
Is it possible for pimples to occur on the genital area as well?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: It is not acne; it is likely a pus-filled lesion due to inadequate skin hygiene.
Please ensure proper disinfection.
If there are instances of redness, it is advisable to check your blood sugar levels.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Pimples or bumps on the penis can be concerning, especially for individuals who may not have experienced them before. It's important to understand that the skin in the genital area is sensitive and can react in various ways to different stimuli. In your case, it sounds like you experienced a small pimple that ruptured and produced a discharge similar to what one might see with acne on the face.

Causes of Pimples on the Penis
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles that can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. It can be caused by bacteria, irritation from shaving, or friction from clothing.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-cancerous lumps that can form under the skin. They are filled with a substance called sebum, which is produced by the sebaceous glands. These cysts can sometimes become inflamed or infected.

3. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that are often found around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis). They are a normal anatomical variant and do not require treatment.

4. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, flesh-colored or white bumps. They may require medical treatment if they are diagnosed.

5. Herpes Simplex Virus: This can cause painful blisters or sores in the genital area. If you notice multiple lesions or flu-like symptoms, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider.

Treatment Options
1. Self-Care: If the bump is minor and has already ruptured, keeping the area clean and dry is crucial. You can wash the area gently with mild soap and water. Avoid squeezing or picking at the area to prevent further irritation or infection.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter topical antibiotics can be applied to prevent infection if the area is open. If you notice signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, or pus), it may be necessary to see a healthcare provider for a prescription antibiotic.

3. Avoid Irritants: Wearing loose-fitting underwear and avoiding harsh soaps or lotions can help prevent further irritation.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bump recurs, does not heal, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as pain, fever, or multiple lesions), it’s essential to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the exact cause of the bump.

Risks and Considerations
- Infection: If the area is not kept clean, there is a risk of developing an infection, especially after a pimple has ruptured.

- Misdiagnosis: Self-diagnosing can lead to mismanagement of a potentially serious condition. Conditions like genital warts or herpes require specific treatments.

- Emotional Impact: Concerns about genital health can lead to anxiety or embarrassment. It’s important to remember that many people experience similar issues, and healthcare providers are trained to handle these situations sensitively.

Conclusion
In summary, while it is common for individuals to experience pimples or bumps on the penis, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If you notice any changes or if the condition persists, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Remember, maintaining good hygiene and being aware of any changes in your body can help you manage your health effectively.
