Scleral pigmentation?
Recently, I noticed a yellow spot on the sclera of my left eye.
I went to an ophthalmologist, and the doctor said it is a pigment deposition.
I am very interested in having surgery to remove it for cosmetic reasons.
Which hospitals in Taichung can perform this type of treatment? Also, will this affect my ability to undergo laser surgery for my myopia in the future? (I plan to do it when I turn 20...)

Hello Nana: Pigmentation can be removed using laser treatments.
As for which hospital in Taichung offers this service, I'm not sure, so you may want to inquire on your own.
It will not affect your future myopia laser surgery.

When it comes to eye pigmentation deposits, commonly referred to as "pinguecula" or "pterygium," these are typically benign growths on the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye. They often appear as yellowish or white lesions and are usually caused by prolonged exposure to UV light, dust, or wind. While they are not harmful to vision, many individuals seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.
In Taichung, several hospitals and eye clinics offer surgical options for the removal of these pigmentation deposits. Notable institutions include:
1. Taichung Veterans General Hospital - This hospital has a reputable ophthalmology department that can provide comprehensive eye care, including the removal of pinguecula or pterygium.
2. China Medical University Hospital - Known for its advanced medical facilities, this hospital also offers eye surgeries and consultations with experienced ophthalmologists.
3. National Taiwan University Hospital, Taichung Branch - This facility provides a wide range of eye care services, including surgical options for cosmetic concerns.
4. Private Eye Clinics - There are numerous private eye clinics in Taichung that specialize in cosmetic eye procedures. It is advisable to research and read reviews about the clinics and the surgeons' experience before proceeding.
Regarding your concern about whether the presence of pigmentation deposits will affect future laser vision correction surgery (like LASIK), the answer is generally no. The presence of a pinguecula or pterygium does not typically interfere with the LASIK procedure itself. However, if you are considering LASIK, it is essential to have a thorough evaluation by an ophthalmologist. They will assess the overall health of your eyes, including the condition of the cornea and any existing lesions, to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
It is also worth noting that if you undergo surgery to remove the pigmentation deposits, your ophthalmologist will likely advise you on the appropriate waiting period before considering LASIK. This is to ensure that your eyes have fully healed from the surgery and that there are no complications that could affect the outcome of the laser procedure.
In summary, if you are considering surgery to remove the pigmentation deposits for cosmetic reasons, consult with a qualified ophthalmologist in Taichung. They can provide you with the best options tailored to your needs and guide you on the timing for any future laser vision correction procedures. Always prioritize your eye health and ensure that any surgical decisions are made with careful consideration and professional guidance.
