Concerns About Stitches After Wisdom Tooth Extraction: What to Do? - Dentistry

On the fourth day after wisdom tooth extraction, I feel that the stitches have come loose?

Last week, I had my lower right wisdom tooth extracted, and they stitched up the site with three sutures.
A few days ago, I didn't notice any holes, but today I discovered a small hole next to the extraction site.
I'm not sure if this is due to the sutures coming undone.
Will this affect the healing of the wound, or do I need to have it re-stitched? Currently, I don't feel any pain or bleeding, but there is still slight redness and swelling.
I have been using mouthwash to clean the area after each meal.

Dear Mr.
Chen,
Hello! It has been four days since your wisdom tooth extraction, and it seems that the stitches may have come loose.
This should not be a concern, but it is important to return to the dentist for a check-up.
Make sure to keep your teeth clean! Take care, and I wish you all the best!
Sincerely,
Dr.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it's common to have concerns about the healing process, especially regarding stitches and any changes in the wound. Based on your description, it seems like you are experiencing some normal post-operative symptoms, but let's break down your concerns and provide some guidance.

Understanding Stitches and Healing
1. Stitches After Extraction: Stitches are often used to close the wound after a wisdom tooth extraction, especially if the extraction was complicated. They help to secure the tissue and promote healing. It's not unusual for stitches to dissolve or come loose as the tissue heals. If you notice a small hole where the stitches were, it could be a sign that the stitches have either dissolved or come loose.
2. Impact of a Small Hole: A small hole in the gum where stitches were can be concerning, but if there is no pain, bleeding, or significant swelling, it may not be a cause for alarm. The body has a remarkable ability to heal, and the surrounding tissue can often close up on its own. However, if the hole is large or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it would be wise to consult your dentist or oral surgeon.

3. When to Seek Help: Since you mentioned that you are not experiencing pain or bleeding, and you are maintaining good oral hygiene by using mouthwash after meals, you may not need to have the stitches replaced. However, if you notice any worsening symptoms or if the redness and swelling persist or increase, it would be advisable to return to your dentist for an evaluation. They can assess whether the wound is healing properly or if further intervention is needed.

Post-Operative Care
1. Oral Hygiene: Continuing to use mouthwash is a good practice, but be cautious with vigorous rinsing, as this can dislodge any healing tissue. Instead, consider gently swishing the mouthwash around the area without forceful rinsing.
2. Diet: Stick to soft foods and avoid anything too hot, spicy, or crunchy that could irritate the extraction site.
3. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on the area for any changes. If you notice increased pain, swelling, or any discharge that appears yellow or green (which could indicate infection), contact your dentist immediately.

4. Pain Management: If you experience any discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: Make sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist. They will be able to monitor your healing process and address any concerns you may have.

Conclusion
In summary, while it’s normal to have some concerns after wisdom tooth extraction, especially regarding stitches and healing, it sounds like you are on the right track. Keep monitoring the area, maintain good oral hygiene, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist if you have any concerns or if your symptoms change. Healing can take time, and it’s important to be patient and attentive to your body’s signals.
