Is it suitable to conceive while taking progesterone for menstrual regulation?
In the past few months, my menstrual cycle has been irregular, and the duration of bleeding has increased.
I started taking a 21-day course of Femoston on January 8, and my period began around January 15, lasting for about two weeks.
This week coincides with my ovulation window.
Today, during my follow-up appointment, the doctor prescribed an additional two weeks of Femoston to help regulate my cycle.
I have already taken two pills earlier (once a day, two pills at a time).
I would like to know if having sexual intercourse in the next two to three days increases the likelihood of conception.
Also, is my current situation suitable for pregnancy, or would it be better to wait until after my next period before considering pregnancy? Thank you!

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, it should not be the ovulation period, so the chances of pregnancy are low.
Just go with the flow and consider trying for pregnancy in the next cycle.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the safety of getting pregnant while taking progesterone for menstrual regulation, it is essential to understand the role of progesterone in the menstrual cycle and its implications for pregnancy. Progesterone is a hormone that plays a critical role in regulating the menstrual cycle and maintaining pregnancy. It is often prescribed to help with irregular menstrual cycles, heavy bleeding, or to support early pregnancy in women who may have a deficiency in this hormone.
In your case, you mentioned that you have been taking a form of progesterone (likely a combination oral contraceptive pill) to regulate your menstrual cycle. If you are currently taking progesterone and are considering becoming pregnant, there are a few important factors to consider:
1. Timing of Ovulation: If you are taking progesterone to regulate your cycle, it is crucial to understand how this medication affects ovulation. Progesterone is typically taken after ovulation has occurred, and it helps prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If you are in the ovulatory phase and have unprotected intercourse, there is a possibility of conception. However, if you are actively taking progesterone, it may suppress ovulation, making it less likely to conceive during this time.
2. Safety of Progesterone During Early Pregnancy: If you do conceive while taking progesterone, it is generally considered safe. In fact, progesterone is often prescribed to women who are pregnant to help maintain the pregnancy, especially if they have a history of miscarriage or low progesterone levels. However, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider about your specific situation, as they can provide personalized advice based on your health history.
3. Consulting Your Healthcare Provider: Before making any decisions about trying to conceive while on progesterone, it is advisable to discuss your plans with your healthcare provider. They can help you assess your current health status, the appropriateness of continuing progesterone, and the best timing for conception. If your menstrual cycle is still irregular, it may be beneficial to stabilize your cycle before attempting to conceive.
4. Consideration of Overall Health: It is also important to consider your overall health and readiness for pregnancy. Factors such as your physical health, mental well-being, and lifestyle choices can all impact your ability to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, addressing these with your healthcare provider is crucial.
5. Waiting for the Next Menstrual Cycle: If you are uncertain about your current situation or if your menstrual cycle is still irregular, it may be wise to wait until after your next menstrual cycle before trying to conceive. This can help ensure that your body is in a more stable state for pregnancy and can also provide you with a clearer understanding of your ovulation patterns.
In summary, while it is possible to conceive while taking progesterone for menstrual regulation, it is essential to consider the timing of ovulation, the safety of the medication during early pregnancy, and your overall health. Consulting with your healthcare provider will provide you with the best guidance tailored to your specific circumstances. They can help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health and family planning.
