Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, my period is already 7 days late according to the app, which estimated that I would start on February 11, but it still hasn't arrived by the 18th.
I haven't had my period in February yet.
Could the heavy flow I had last time be the reason for this delay? Also, I had unprotected intercourse at midnight on the 18th, but there was no ejaculation inside.
Is there a chance I could be pregnant? According to the app, if my period was supposed to start on the 11th, the 18th would be around my ovulation period, but since I haven't gotten my period yet, this ovulation estimate might not be accurate, right?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even if ejaculation has not occurred during intercourse, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
Many factors can influence the menstrual cycle, such as age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to understanding potential pregnancy, menstrual delays, and ovulation, several factors come into play. First, it's essential to recognize that menstrual cycles can vary significantly among individuals and even from month to month for the same person. A typical cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with an average of about 28 days. However, various factors can influence this cycle, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and even illness.

In your case, you mentioned that your period was due on February 11, and it has now been delayed by seven days. This delay can be attributed to several reasons. If your last menstrual period was particularly heavy, it could lead to hormonal fluctuations that might affect your next cycle. However, it's also important to consider other factors such as stress levels, lifestyle changes, or even underlying health conditions that could contribute to a delayed period.

Regarding the sexual activity on February 18, it's crucial to understand that while you did not have internal ejaculation, there is still a possibility of pregnancy. Pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, and if it comes into contact with the vaginal area, there is a risk of sperm entering the reproductive tract. Since you mentioned that February 18 falls within your estimated ovulation period (if your cycle were regular), this could increase the likelihood of conception, even if you did not have full intercourse.

Given that your menstrual app predicted your period to start on February 11, and you have not yet menstruated, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. If you take the test and it comes back positive, it would indicate that you are likely pregnant. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, consider consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

It's also worth noting that if you experience significant menstrual irregularities, it may be beneficial to track your cycles more closely and discuss them with a healthcare professional. They can help determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed, such as hormonal imbalances or other reproductive health concerns.

In summary, while a delayed period can be concerning, it can result from various factors, and the possibility of pregnancy exists even without internal ejaculation. Taking a pregnancy test will provide clarity, and if you continue to experience irregular cycles, seeking medical advice is recommended.
