Dalian missed a dose for one day?

Hello, doctor.
I have been taking Diane for a year without interruption or missing any doses.
However, today I suddenly realized that I missed one pill this month, and my period is expected to start next Sunday.
I also forgot which day I missed.
What should I do about the missed pill in this situation? Should I take it or not? If I should take it, how should I take it? If I have unprotected intercourse in this situation, is there a high chance of pregnancy?

Tian, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/02/21

Hello, if you forgot to take your medication that day, just continue taking the full dosage as usual.
The chances of pregnancy should be low.
Please remember for next time; if you forget to take it, you can take two pills the next day.
Wishing you good health.

If you have missed a day of taking your Dailian birth control pill, it's important to take immediate action to minimize the risk of unintended pregnancy. Dailian, like many combination oral contraceptives, works by preventing ovulation, and missing a pill can disrupt this mechanism.

First, if you realize that you have missed a pill, you should take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in one day (the missed pill and the current day's pill). If you remember the missed pill on the same day, just take it as soon as possible. If you remember the missed pill the next day, take both the missed pill and the current day's pill together. However, if you remember the missed pill after two days or more, you should skip the missed pill and continue with your regular schedule.
In terms of protection against pregnancy, if you missed one pill and took it as soon as you remembered, your contraceptive protection should still be effective. However, if you missed a pill and did not take it within 24 hours, your protection may be compromised, especially if you have unprotected intercourse during that time. The general recommendation is to use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms, for at least the next seven days after missing a pill to ensure you are protected against pregnancy.

Since you mentioned that your period is expected next Sunday, it's also important to note that the timing of your missed pill in relation to your menstrual cycle can influence the risk of pregnancy. If you missed a pill in the first week of your pack, the risk of pregnancy is higher compared to missing a pill in the last week, especially if you had unprotected intercourse during that time.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy due to missed pills, you may consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or if you experience any unusual symptoms. Additionally, if you find yourself frequently forgetting to take your pill, you might want to discuss alternative contraceptive methods with your healthcare provider, such as an IUD, implant, or other long-acting reversible contraceptives that do not require daily attention.

In summary, if you missed a Dailian pill, take it as soon as you remember, and if you have had unprotected intercourse, consider using backup contraception for the next week. If you have further concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
