Erectile issues after circumcision?
Hello Doctor: I underwent a circumcision on February 3rd and have followed the outpatient physician's instructions for showering.
There has been no further bleeding or discharge from the wound, but the sutures have not yet dissolved.
On February 20th, I experienced a tear and bleeding of the frenulum due to an erection.
After a follow-up visit, the outpatient physician indicated that no re-stitching or additional bandaging was necessary.
However, I am still concerned about the possibility of injuring the frenulum again during an erection.
Given my situation, do you think I should continue to limit the frequency of my erections? How much longer will it take for me to fully heal? Thank you!

Hello: Due to the presence of a wound, it is important to avoid erections to prevent the wound from enlarging.
Please take good care of the wound, as it will take about 10 days to heal.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications. It’s understandable to have concerns about erections and the potential for injury during the healing process.
After a circumcision, the healing time can vary depending on individual factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Generally, the initial healing phase can take about 1 to 2 weeks, during which the surgical site should be monitored for any signs of infection or complications. The stitches used during the procedure typically dissolve on their own within a few weeks, but in your case, it seems that the stitches have not yet fallen out, which is not uncommon.
Regarding your concern about erections causing further injury to the frenulum (the band of tissue on the underside of the penis), it is advisable to be cautious. Erections can occur involuntarily, and while they are a normal physiological response, they can put stress on the healing tissue. If you experience pain or bleeding during an erection, it is a sign that the area may still be sensitive or not fully healed.
Here are some tips for managing your situation:
1. Limit Sexual Activity: It is wise to avoid sexual activity, including masturbation, until you feel confident that the area has healed sufficiently. This may take several weeks, so listen to your body and consult your doctor if you have concerns.
2. Monitor for Signs of Healing: Keep an eye on the surgical site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
3. Pain Management: If you experience discomfort during an erection, consider using over-the-counter pain relief medications as recommended by your doctor.
4. Follow-Up Appointments: Make sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can assess the healing process and provide personalized advice based on your recovery.
5. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear to minimize friction and irritation to the area. This can help reduce the likelihood of discomfort during erections.
6. Patience with Healing: Understand that healing takes time. While it may be frustrating, allowing your body the necessary time to heal will ultimately lead to better outcomes.
In terms of how long it will take for you to fully heal, it can vary, but many patients find that they feel significantly better within 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery. However, if you continue to experience issues or have concerns about your healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
In summary, while it is important to be cautious with erections during the healing process, following proper care guidelines and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure a smooth recovery.
