Foreign body sensation in the throat?

Hello Dr.
Zheng, while I was eating roasted duck leg last night, I was watching TV and accidentally swallowed what I thought was a small piece of cartilage, but it felt more like a small piece of meat that I hadn't chewed properly.
When I swallowed it, it felt like a small chunk of meat went down.
Although I drank water and ate something afterward and I don't feel much pain or have any coughing, I still have a sensation of something being stuck.
I'm worried that it might really be lodged in my throat or trachea.
My family says it's just my anxiety causing the sensation of something stuck in my throat.
I would appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/02/25

Hello, if there are no obvious symptoms such as pain while swallowing or difficulty swallowing, you may start with self-observation.
However, if the sensation of a foreign body becomes more intense or does not improve, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

The sensation of a foreign body in the throat, often referred to as "globus sensation," can be quite distressing. It typically arises after swallowing food, especially if one is distracted, as you mentioned while eating your duck leg. This sensation can be caused by several factors, and understanding them can help alleviate your concerns.

Possible Causes
1. Food Particles: When you swallow food without chewing it properly, small pieces can get lodged in the throat. Even if you do not feel pain or discomfort afterward, the sensation of something being stuck can linger. This is particularly common with tougher or more fibrous foods.

2. Muscle Tension: Anxiety and stress can lead to muscle tension in the throat area. This tension can create a feeling of tightness or the sensation that something is stuck. Your family’s suggestion that you might be feeling this due to nervousness is valid; anxiety can amplify physical sensations.

3. Esophageal Spasms: Sometimes, the esophagus can spasm, which may create a feeling of tightness or discomfort. This can happen after eating, especially if the food was difficult to swallow.

4. Reflux: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause irritation in the throat, leading to a sensation of something being stuck. If you experience heartburn or regurgitation, this might be a contributing factor.

5. Allergic Reactions: In some cases, food allergies can cause swelling in the throat, leading to a sensation of tightness or obstruction. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a consideration.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Stay Calm: Anxiety can exacerbate the sensation of a foreign body in the throat. Try to relax and take deep breaths. Distracting yourself with activities you enjoy can also help.

2. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water can help wash down any small food particles that may be stuck. Warm liquids, such as herbal tea, can be soothing.

3. Swallowing Techniques: If you feel the sensation persists, try swallowing a small piece of soft bread or a banana. These can help push down any particles that may be causing discomfort.

4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy or acidic foods that may irritate your throat further. If you have a history of reflux, consider dietary changes to minimize symptoms.

5. Consult a Doctor: If the sensation persists for more than a few days, or if you experience pain, difficulty swallowing, or any other concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination or recommend imaging studies to rule out any serious conditions.

6. Consider Psychological Factors: If anxiety is a significant factor, speaking with a mental health professional may be beneficial. They can provide strategies to manage anxiety and its physical manifestations.

In conclusion, while the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can be alarming, it is often benign and related to factors such as muscle tension, food particles, or anxiety. Staying calm, hydrating, and monitoring your symptoms are good initial steps. However, do not hesitate to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Your health and peace of mind are paramount.
