Three months after surgery, there are issues with bowel movements?

Hello doctor, about three months ago I underwent a mixed hemorrhoid surgery.
Right after the surgery, I noticed a lump at the anal opening, and the doctor said it was leftover skin from the procedure that would eventually retract.
However, it seems that it hasn't retracted much, and when my stool is softer, I have to push on it for it to come out.
Is this normal?
I have another question: everyone says not to strain too much during bowel movements, but sometimes when I feel the urge to go or feel the stool at the anal opening, if I don't push hard, it won't come out.
Should I continue to try to go, or should I wait a while and try again?

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various bowel issues during their recovery. The presence of a lump at the anal area, as you described, could be a remnant of the surgical procedure, such as excess skin or scar tissue. This is often referred to as a "skin tag," which can occur after hemorrhoid surgery. While it is generally expected that these tags may shrink over time, they do not always disappear completely. If the lump is causing discomfort or affecting your bowel movements, it would be advisable to consult your surgeon for further evaluation.

Regarding your concerns about bowel movements, it is essential to understand that after surgery, your body may need time to adjust. The advice to avoid straining during bowel movements is crucial, as excessive pressure can lead to complications such as bleeding or the recurrence of hemorrhoids. If you feel the urge to have a bowel movement but are unable to pass stool without straining, it may be beneficial to wait a bit and try again later. This approach can help prevent unnecessary strain on the anal area.

In the meantime, there are several strategies you can implement to facilitate smoother bowel movements and promote healing:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Increasing your fiber intake can help soften your stool, making it easier to pass. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Additionally, consider incorporating fiber supplements if necessary.

2. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining soft stools. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day, as hydration plays a significant role in digestive health.

3. Regular Bowel Habits: Establishing a routine can help your body recognize when it is time to have a bowel movement. Try to go to the bathroom at the same time each day, even if you do not feel the urge.

4. Gentle Techniques: If you feel the need to push, try to do so gently. You can also use a footstool to elevate your feet while sitting on the toilet, which can help align your body for easier passage of stool.

5. Avoiding Strain: If you find that you are unable to pass stool without straining, it is better to stop and try again later rather than forcing it. This can help prevent further irritation or injury to the surgical site.

6. Consultation with a Specialist: If you continue to experience difficulties or if the lump at the anal area becomes painful or bothersome, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon or a gastroenterologist. They can assess your situation and determine if any additional treatment is necessary.

In summary, while some post-surgery bowel issues can be normal, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide tailored advice and interventions to support your recovery and ensure that you are on the right track. Remember, healing takes time, and being proactive about your health will contribute to a smoother recovery process.
