After retinal hole repair, the vision may be blurry?
Hello, Dr.
Gao: About 5 or 6 days ago, I went for an eye examination and suddenly discovered a hole in the retina of my left eye (I don't know the exact location of the hole, just that it's in the left eye).
It was treated immediately with laser photocoagulation.
Since the following day, I've noticed a slight blurriness in the upper right part of my left eye.
It's not very noticeable when looking at distant objects, but it becomes more apparent when reading newspapers or books.
My eye is not red or swollen, and occasionally I experience a mild, fleeting pain in the left eye, but it is very slight and doesn't last long.
However, the blurriness in the upper right part of my left eye has persisted, which is concerning.
Doctor, could this be due to the fact that I just had surgery a few days ago and haven't fully recovered yet? Will this condition disappear over time? Thank you!

Dear concerned individual,
Laser treatment involves applying energy to the retina, which may initially cause some discomfort or a stinging sensation, as it essentially involves a burning effect.
Additionally, the treated area may experience temporary retinal edema, leading to symptoms such as dimmed vision, narrowed visual fields, or a hazy appearance.
These symptoms are likely to improve gradually over time.
Please remember to discuss any concerns with your physician during your follow-up appointment to check for any other potential issues.
At Taiwan E-Hospital Puzi Hospital, the ophthalmology department is available on the following schedule:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Wednesday: 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is essential to seek care at a medical facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Best regards,
Gao Pilin

After undergoing retinal laser repair, it is not uncommon to experience some degree of blurriness or visual disturbances in the affected eye. This can be particularly concerning, especially when you notice a persistent foggy sensation, as you described in your left eye.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that the healing process after any ocular surgery, including retinal laser procedures, can vary significantly from person to person. The laser treatment aims to seal the retinal tear or hole, but the surrounding tissues may still be in the process of healing. This healing phase can lead to temporary visual disturbances, including blurriness, which may be more pronounced when focusing on near objects, such as reading materials.
The foggy sensation you are experiencing in the upper right quadrant of your left eye could be attributed to several factors:
1. Postoperative Inflammation: After laser surgery, some degree of inflammation is expected. This inflammation can cause temporary changes in vision, including blurriness. As the inflammation subsides over time, your vision may improve.
2. Fluid Accumulation: Sometimes, fluid can accumulate in the retina or surrounding tissues after surgery, leading to a temporary distortion in vision. This condition, known as cystoid macular edema, can cause blurriness and may resolve on its own or with treatment.
3. Healing of the Retina: The retina itself takes time to heal after being treated with laser. During this period, the visual quality may fluctuate as the tissues recover.
4. Visual Adaptation: Your brain may also need time to adjust to the changes in your vision post-surgery. This adaptation process can sometimes lead to temporary visual disturbances.
Regarding your concern about whether this foggy sensation will resolve, it is likely that as your eye continues to heal, the blurriness will diminish. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the blurriness persists or worsens, or if you experience any new symptoms such as increased pain, redness, or sudden changes in vision, you should contact your eye care provider immediately.
In terms of management, here are a few recommendations:
- Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist. They will monitor your healing process and can provide specific interventions if necessary.
- Rest Your Eyes: Avoid straining your eyes with prolonged reading or screen time, especially if you notice increased discomfort or blurriness.
- Medication: If prescribed, continue using any anti-inflammatory or antibiotic eye drops as directed by your doctor. These medications can help reduce inflammation and prevent infection, aiding in the healing process.
- Report Changes: Keep a journal of your symptoms, noting any changes in your vision or discomfort levels. This information can be valuable for your doctor in assessing your recovery.
In conclusion, while it is common to experience some blurriness after retinal laser repair, it is crucial to stay vigilant about your symptoms and maintain open communication with your eye care provider. With time and appropriate care, many patients see significant improvement in their vision following such procedures.
