After tooth extraction, the teeth on the same side feel sticky?
Hello, I had my lower left wisdom tooth extracted seven days ago, and I just had my stitches removed yesterday.
Before the stitches were removed, I tried to chew on the right side as much as possible.
After the stitches were taken out, when I started chewing on the left side, I noticed that the teeth on that side feel sticky, as if there is a layer of something sticky on them.
This sensation is particularly noticeable when I bite into something! It feels fine otherwise, but I'm not sure what is happening.

Dear Ms.
Chou,
Hello! It is possible that the plaque buildup on your left teeth is due to not brushing them thoroughly recently.
You should recover soon! Take care and I wish you all the best!
Sincerely,
Dr.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it's not uncommon to experience various sensations in the mouth, including a sticky or slimy feeling on the teeth. This sensation can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process and the changes occurring in your mouth after the extraction.
Firstly, after a tooth extraction, particularly of a wisdom tooth, the area where the tooth was removed undergoes a healing process. This involves the formation of a blood clot in the socket, which is essential for healing. If the clot is disturbed or if the area is not kept clean, it can lead to the accumulation of food particles, bacteria, and debris, which may create a sticky sensation. This feeling can be exacerbated if you are not able to brush the area properly during the initial healing phase, as you may have been advised to avoid vigorous brushing around the extraction site.
Secondly, the sensation could also be related to the presence of oral bacteria. After an extraction, the mouth's environment changes, and the balance of bacteria can shift. If proper oral hygiene is not maintained, it can lead to a condition known as dry socket or even an infection, both of which can contribute to unusual sensations in the mouth.
Another possibility is that the sensation is due to the healing of the gums and the surrounding tissues. As the gums heal, they may feel different, and you might notice changes in how your teeth feel against each other. This can sometimes be perceived as a sticky or unusual sensation.
To address this issue, here are some recommendations:
1. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue to brush your teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site for the first few days after the stitches are removed. After that, you can start to gently clean the area to prevent food buildup and bacteria accumulation.
2. Rinse with Salt Water: After the extraction, rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help keep the area clean and promote healing. This can also help alleviate any sticky sensation you may be feeling.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help wash away food particles and bacteria, reducing the sticky feeling.
4. Monitor for Other Symptoms: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge from the extraction site. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to contact your dentist or oral surgeon.
5. Follow-Up Appointment: If the sticky sensation persists or worsens, consider scheduling a follow-up appointment with your dentist. They can examine the extraction site to ensure that it is healing properly and that there are no complications.
In summary, a sticky sensation in your teeth after wisdom tooth extraction can be a normal part of the healing process, but it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene and monitor for any signs of complications. If you have concerns or if the sensation does not improve, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider for further evaluation and guidance.
