Urological Development: Is My Growth Normal? - Urology

Developmental issues

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my penis size.
When not erect, it measures 5 cm in length and is slightly smaller in circumference than a standard plastic bottle opening.
My testicles are about half the size of a ping pong ball.
When erect, my penis measures 11.5 cm in length and has a girth similar to two fingers, with some pubic hair.
Is this normal, and will I continue to develop?

zxc, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/03/08

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Your size is normal.
Some individuals may appear smaller due to excess fat in the pubic area, but as long as erections are normal, that is fine.
Additionally, if you are 22 years old and have completed puberty, including the development of pubic hair and voice changes, there is likely little chance for further development.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to urological development, particularly during puberty, it's important to understand that growth patterns can vary significantly among individuals. Based on the details you've provided, let's break down your concerns regarding penile size, testicular development, and overall growth during this critical phase of life.

1. Normal Size and Development: At your age, the average size of an erect penis can vary widely. Research indicates that the average erect penis size is approximately 12 to 16 centimeters (about 4.7 to 6.3 inches), while the average flaccid size is around 9.16 centimeters (about 3.6 inches). Your measurements of 11.5 cm when erect and 5 cm when flaccid fall within the normal range. It's also important to note that penis size does not determine masculinity or sexual capability, and many factors contribute to individual differences.

2. Testicular Size: The size of your testicles is also a crucial aspect of male development. Testicular size can vary, but generally, they should be about the size of a large marble or a small egg. If your testicles are approximately half the size of a ping pong ball, this is typically considered normal, especially during the early stages of puberty. Testicular development is a key indicator of puberty progression, and it sounds like you are on the right track.

3. Puberty Timeline: Puberty in males typically begins between the ages of 9 and 14, and it can last until the late teens or early twenties. The presence of pubic hair is a sign that you are progressing through puberty. Since you mentioned that you have developed pubic hair, this indicates that your body is undergoing the changes associated with puberty.
4. Potential for Further Growth: Many males continue to grow in height and experience changes in their genitalia well into their late teens and early twenties. The growth plates in your bones, which determine your final height, usually close after puberty. However, as long as you are still experiencing signs of puberty (like growth of body hair, changes in voice, and testicular development), there is a possibility that you may continue to grow both in height and in the size of your genitalia.

5. Individual Variation: It's essential to remember that everyone develops at their own pace. Factors such as genetics, nutrition, and overall health can influence growth patterns. If your family members experienced late growth spurts, you might also follow a similar pattern.

6. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or development, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider or a urologist. They can perform a physical examination and possibly conduct tests to assess your hormonal levels and growth potential. This can provide you with reassurance and a clearer understanding of your development.

In summary, based on the information you've provided, your growth appears to be within the normal range for your age. As you continue through puberty, it's likely that you will experience further changes. If you have any specific concerns or if you notice any unusual changes, seeking professional medical advice is always a good step. Remember, puberty is a unique journey for everyone, and patience is key as your body continues to develop.
