Can I get pregnant?
Hello, doctor.
Thank you for answering this question.
My girlfriend had her period on February 10th, and she is supposed to have it on March 9th, as her cycle is typically 28 days and very regular.
However, it is now March 14th, and she still hasn't gotten her period.
We had intercourse on March 4th, but there was no ejaculation inside or outside.
She has been experiencing abdominal discomfort on March 11th, 12th, and 13th.
She took stomach medication on March 5th.
Could the stomach medication cause a delay in her period? Is her delayed menstruation a sign of pregnancy?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, you should not be pregnant.
Wait for another week, and if there is still no change, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy, several factors need to be considered, especially in the context of your girlfriend's menstrual cycle and the sexual activity that occurred. Based on the information you've provided, your girlfriend's menstrual cycle is typically 28 days, with her last period starting on February 10. This means that her next expected period would have been around March 9. However, as of March 14, she has not yet had her period, which indicates a delay of about five days.
The first thing to note is that menstrual cycles can be influenced by various factors, including stress, hormonal changes, and even medications. You mentioned that your girlfriend took stomach medication around March 5. While most stomach medications do not typically affect menstrual cycles, some medications can have side effects that might influence hormonal balance or cause gastrointestinal distress, which could indirectly affect her cycle. However, without knowing the specific medication, it's difficult to ascertain its potential impact.
Regarding the sexual activity on March 4, you indicated that there was no ejaculation inside her, which significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. However, it's important to remember that pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, albeit in much smaller quantities. If there was any chance of sperm being present, there is a slight risk of pregnancy, but it is generally considered low, especially since you did not ejaculate.
The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing, such as abdominal discomfort, could be related to a variety of factors, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), stress, or even gastrointestinal issues, especially given her recent medication. It's not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle due to stress or other lifestyle changes, which could explain the delay.
To determine whether your girlfriend is pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. It's best to wait until at least the first day of her missed period for the most accurate results, but since she is already a few days late, taking the test now should provide a clear answer.
If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it may be wise for her to consult a healthcare provider. They can provide further evaluation and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy due to the sexual encounter, the likelihood is low given the circumstances you described. The delay in her period could be attributed to various factors, including stress or medication. The best course of action is to take a pregnancy test and consult a healthcare professional if there are any concerns or if her period does not return soon.
