Inquiry about eye problems?

Hello doctor, I have recently been experiencing a pulling sensation in my eyes.
After visiting the hospital, the doctor mentioned that it might be due to eye strain caused by the muscles in my eyes being overworked.
The doctor suggested that I get glasses with a slightly lower prescription, which initially helped reduce the pulling sensation, but it has started to return.
I would like to know if I should go back to the hospital for further examination, or if there are specific tests that can determine the underlying cause.
Additionally, are there any ways to improve this condition, and would taking lutein be beneficial?

Dai Dai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/03/24

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Daidai: This may indicate that you are either overusing your eyes or that your glasses prescription is not sufficient.
If your condition improves after resting, it is likely due to one of these issues.
If you cannot get enough rest, you may consider using some muscle relaxants to alleviate soreness.
Lutein is not relevant in this context.
When using a computer or reading, you can apply the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of screen time, look away from the screen for 20 seconds and focus on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away.
Blinking 20 times during this break would be even better.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and on Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is still necessary to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if needed.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

More Info

Eye strain, also known as asthenopia, is a common condition that can result from prolonged use of digital devices, reading, or any activity that requires intense focus. Symptoms can include discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision, and a pulling sensation in the eyes, as you have described. Understanding the underlying causes and potential solutions is crucial for managing this condition effectively.

Symptoms of Eye Strain
The symptoms of eye strain can vary from person to person but often include:
- A pulling or aching sensation in the eyes
- Dry or watery eyes
- Blurred or double vision
- Difficulty focusing
- Headaches
- Sensitivity to light
- Tiredness or fatigue in the eyes

Causes of Eye Strain
Eye strain can be caused by several factors, including:
1. Prolonged Screen Time: Spending long hours in front of computers, tablets, or smartphones can lead to digital eye strain. The blue light emitted by screens can also contribute to discomfort.

2. Poor Lighting: Insufficient or harsh lighting can cause the eyes to work harder, leading to fatigue.

3. Incorrect Prescription: Wearing glasses or contact lenses with an incorrect prescription can strain the eyes.

4. Uncorrected Vision Problems: Conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can contribute to eye strain if not properly corrected.

5. Poor Posture: Sitting too close to a screen or in an awkward position can increase strain on the eyes and neck.

Solutions and Management
To alleviate eye strain, consider the following strategies:
1. Regular Eye Exams: It's essential to have your eyes checked regularly by an eye care professional. If you have already seen a doctor and received a new prescription, but symptoms persist, it may be worth returning for a follow-up. Your prescription may need further adjustment, or there may be other underlying issues.

2. Adjust Your Workspace: Ensure that your computer screen is at eye level and about an arm's length away. Use proper lighting to reduce glare on the screen.

3. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: To reduce strain, every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps relax the eye muscles.

4. Use Proper Eyewear: If your doctor has suggested a lower prescription, it may help reduce strain. Ensure that your glasses are comfortable and fit well. If you wear contact lenses, ensure they are the right type and fit for your eyes.

5. Take Breaks: Regular breaks from screen time can help reduce fatigue. Stand up, stretch, and blink frequently to keep your eyes moist.

6. Consider Eye Drops: If you experience dryness, artificial tears can help keep your eyes lubricated.

7. Nutrition: While there is no direct evidence that lutein supplements can alleviate eye strain, a diet rich in antioxidants, including lutein, can support overall eye health. Foods like leafy greens, carrots, and fish are beneficial.

8. Eye Exercises: Simple exercises can help relieve tension. For example, rolling your eyes or focusing on a near object and then a distant one can help.

When to Seek Further Help
If your symptoms persist despite these measures, or if you experience sudden changes in vision, it's crucial to seek further evaluation from an eye care professional. They may conduct additional tests to rule out other conditions, such as dry eye syndrome, refractive errors, or more serious issues like retinal problems.

In summary, while eye strain is often manageable with lifestyle adjustments and proper care, persistent symptoms warrant further investigation. Regular check-ups and being proactive about your eye health are key to maintaining clear and comfortable vision.
