Seeking Guidance: Recommended Psychology Books for PTSD Recovery - Psychiatry

Please provide me with some book titles and their ISBNs?

Hello, doctor.
A psychiatrist from a hospital in Macau has prescribed me paroxetine hydrochloride 40mg, clonazepam 1mg, aripiprazole 20mg, and quetiapine fumarate 300mg to take daily.
He does not allow any clinical psychologist to treat me, so I have to rely on his medications to maintain my daily life.
A clinical psychologist from that hospital who previously treated me had a personal interest in me, which is why they do not allow any psychologist to treat me.
I am unsure of what his ultimate intentions are.
This is what I currently know about the situation.
That psychologist even came to the psychological center at National Taiwan University Hospital, where I used to receive treatment, to harass my psychologist, Wang Hsiu-Chih, causing her to stop treating me.
Right now, I can only stay in Macau and feel angry.
Please advise me on purchasing some psychology books to help me treat my PTSD.
I have lost hope in clinical psychologists and regret not double majoring in psychology when I was at National Taiwan University.

Hello,
From your message, it is clear that you are experiencing anxiety regarding your treatment, which is a common feeling among many patients.
Mental illnesses directly affect an individual's mental state and can be long-lasting and sometimes difficult to fully control, which can indeed be disheartening.
Therefore, it is important to have more resources around you to help maintain a positive and optimistic attitude.

I recommend that you schedule regular follow-up appointments to discuss your condition and social adaptation strategies with a consistent physician.
There are indeed many psychological books available on the market, representing various psychological schools, each with its own benefits, but I cannot specifically recommend which books would be suitable for you.

However, I can suggest that you engage in regular physical exercise and develop hobbies to divert your attention.
Additionally, learning relaxation and stress management techniques can help reduce your anxiety about the future.
I hope these suggestions will be beneficial to you.

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles and the challenges you've faced in your mental health journey. It's understandable to feel frustrated and overwhelmed, especially when dealing with PTSD and the complexities of treatment. While medication can be a crucial part of managing symptoms, integrating self-help strategies and educational resources can also be beneficial. Here are some recommended psychology books that may assist you in your recovery from PTSD:
1. "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma" by Bessel van der Kolk - This book is a seminal work in understanding trauma and its effects on the body and mind. Van der Kolk discusses various treatment modalities and emphasizes the importance of body awareness in healing from trauma.

2. "Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma" by Peter A. Levine - Levine introduces the concept of somatic experiencing, a body-oriented approach to healing trauma. This book provides insights into how trauma affects our bodies and offers practical exercises to help release trauma stored in the body.

3. "Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving" by Pete Walker - This book is particularly helpful for those who have experienced prolonged trauma. Walker provides a comprehensive guide to understanding complex PTSD and offers practical strategies for recovery, including self-care techniques and emotional regulation skills.

4. "Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body" by Peter A. Levine and Ann Frederick - This book offers a step-by-step program for healing trauma, combining theoretical insights with practical exercises. It's a great resource for those looking to engage in self-directed healing.

It includes practical tools for managing anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress.

6. "Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence - From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror" by Judith Herman - Herman's work is foundational in the field of trauma studies. She explores the impact of trauma on individuals and society and discusses the process of recovery.

7. "Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression" by Zindel V. Segal, J. Mark G. Williams, and John D. Teasdale - While primarily focused on depression, this book incorporates mindfulness techniques that can be beneficial for managing PTSD symptoms. It offers a structured approach to understanding and changing negative thought patterns.

8. "The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" by Edmund J. Bourne - This workbook provides practical strategies for managing anxiety and related symptoms, which can be particularly helpful for those with PTSD.

In addition to reading, consider incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, into your daily routine. These practices can help ground you and reduce anxiety. Journaling can also be a powerful tool for processing emotions and experiences.

While it's unfortunate that you've had negative experiences with clinical psychologists, it's important to remember that not all therapists are the same. If you feel comfortable, consider seeking out a different therapist or counselor who specializes in trauma and PTSD. Building a trusting therapeutic relationship can be a vital part of the healing process.

Lastly, if you ever feel overwhelmed or in crisis, please reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. You don't have to navigate this journey alone, and there are people who want to support you. Healing from trauma is a process, and it's okay to seek help along the way.
