Throat issues
Doctor, today while eating crab, I accidentally swallowed a small thin piece that resembles a shell.
Although my throat feels fine now, it felt a bit strange at first, but it improved after drinking some water.
I would like to know if it could still be stuck in my throat or if it has gone to my stomach and could cause any injury.
Thank you.

Hello, usually substances like crab shells will pass through the stomach and be excreted in the feces, and they are unlikely to get stuck in the stomach.
Thank you for your question.

More Info
Swallowing a small piece of crab shell can be concerning, but the risks and potential complications depend on several factors, including the size and shape of the shell, as well as your individual anatomy and health status. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what you might expect and what you should do.
Risks of Swallowing Crab Shells
1. Choking Hazard: The immediate concern when swallowing any foreign object, including crab shells, is the risk of choking. If the piece is large enough to obstruct your airway, it could lead to choking, which is a medical emergency. However, since you mentioned that your throat felt fine after drinking water, it’s likely that the shell has either passed through or is small enough not to cause immediate distress.
2. Esophageal Injury: If the shell is sharp or jagged, there is a risk that it could scratch or puncture the lining of the esophagus as it passes down. This could lead to pain, bleeding, or infection. Symptoms of esophageal injury may include severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or the sensation of something stuck in your throat.
3. Gastric Injury: Once the shell reaches the stomach, the risk of injury decreases significantly. The stomach lining is more resilient than the esophagus. However, if the shell is particularly sharp, it could potentially cause irritation or injury to the stomach lining, leading to gastritis or ulcers.
What to Expect
- Immediate Symptoms: After swallowing a crab shell, you might experience a sensation of something stuck in your throat, mild discomfort, or even a scratchy feeling. Drinking water, as you did, can help alleviate this sensation by washing the shell down.
- Delayed Symptoms: If the shell causes any injury, symptoms may not appear immediately. Watch for signs such as persistent pain in the throat or chest, difficulty swallowing, or vomiting. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s essential to seek medical attention.
What to Do Next
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on how you feel over the next few hours and days. If you notice any worsening symptoms or new symptoms, such as severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or blood in your vomit, seek medical attention promptly.
2. Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink fluids, as this can help soothe your throat and assist in moving the shell along your digestive tract.
3. Avoid Irritants: For the next few days, avoid spicy, acidic, or rough foods that could irritate your throat or esophagus. Stick to soft, bland foods until you feel completely normal.
4. Consult a Doctor: If you have any concerns or if symptoms develop, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform an examination or imaging studies (like an X-ray) to ensure that the shell has passed and that there are no injuries.
Conclusion
While swallowing a small piece of crab shell can be alarming, many people pass such objects without any complications. The key is to monitor your symptoms and seek medical help if anything unusual arises. Remember, your health and safety are the top priority, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider if you have concerns.
