Sexual intercourse after medical abortion?

I discovered I was pregnant at 5 weeks in March.
I went to the hospital for an examination on March 15 and chose medical abortion.
I took the first dose of medication on March 17 and returned for a follow-up to take the second dose until March 20.
The doctor said everything was cleared out, but there was still some tissue left in the uterine lining, so I was prescribed medication to help with uterine contractions and was told to return for a follow-up.
By March 31, I had no bleeding or discharge.
However, I had sexual intercourse that day with ejaculation.
Is it possible that I could become pregnant again? If so, will my menstrual period not come until the end of April?

Yu Yu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/04/01

When it comes to post-medication abortion and the potential for pregnancy after sexual intercourse, there are several important factors to consider. First, it’s crucial to understand the timeline of events and the physiological changes that occur after a medical abortion.

In your case, you mentioned that you had a medical abortion on March 15, followed by the administration of medication to help expel the remaining tissue. By March 31, you reported that you had no bleeding or discharge, which is a positive sign that your body is returning to its pre-pregnancy state. However, it’s important to note that ovulation can occur as soon as two weeks after an abortion, even if your menstrual cycle has not yet resumed.

If you engaged in sexual intercourse on March 31 and there was ejaculation, there is indeed a possibility of becoming pregnant again. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after your abortion, there is a chance that the sperm could fertilize an egg. Therefore, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it may be wise to consider taking a home pregnancy test a few weeks after the incident, or consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Regarding your menstrual cycle, it typically takes some time for your body to regulate after an abortion. While some women may experience their next period within four to six weeks, others may take longer. Since you mentioned that your next period is expected at the end of April, this aligns with the typical recovery timeline. However, keep in mind that hormonal fluctuations and the physical changes your body has undergone can affect the timing of your menstrual cycle.

In terms of contraception, if you are not planning to conceive again immediately, it is advisable to discuss birth control options with your healthcare provider. There are various methods available, including hormonal contraceptives, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and barrier methods, which can help prevent unintended pregnancies in the future.

It is also worth mentioning that concerns about fertility after an abortion are common. However, most women are able to conceive again after a medical abortion without any long-term effects on their fertility. If you have any specific concerns about your reproductive health or future pregnancies, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.

In summary, yes, there is a possibility of becoming pregnant after having a medical abortion if you engage in unprotected sex shortly afterward. Your menstrual cycle may take some time to normalize, and it’s important to consider effective contraception if you wish to avoid another pregnancy. Always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider for any questions or concerns regarding your reproductive health.
