Varicocele
Hello doctor, today while showering, I noticed something resembling a worm, like a blood vessel, on the upper left side of my scrotum.
It becomes more noticeable when I slightly lift the scrotum forward and upward.
After reading articles and asking questions, I suspect it might be a varicocele.
However, I currently do not have any discomfort.
Should I just avoid prolonged sitting or standing and refrain from vigorous exercise for maintenance? Is there anything else I should pay attention to? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Based on your description, varicocele is a possibility.
If a definitive diagnosis is needed, it is still recommended that you visit an outpatient clinic.
Mild varicocele is not uncommon in young males, and as long as there is no discomfort and it does not cause infertility, it can be monitored.

More Info
Varicocele is a condition characterized by the enlargement of veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that occur in the legs. It is often described as feeling like a "bag of worms" due to the twisted and enlarged veins. While many individuals with varicocele may not experience any symptoms, it can sometimes lead to discomfort, fertility issues, or other complications.
Symptoms of Varicocele
Although you mentioned that you currently do not experience discomfort, it is important to be aware of potential symptoms that can arise, including:
- A dull ache or pain in the scrotum, which may worsen after prolonged standing or physical activity.
- A feeling of heaviness in the affected side of the scrotum.
- Changes in the size of the veins, which may become more pronounced when standing or during physical exertion.
- In some cases, varicocele can lead to fertility problems, as it may affect sperm production and quality.
Care and Lifestyle Tips
Since you have identified the condition but are not experiencing discomfort, there are several lifestyle modifications and care strategies you can adopt to manage varicocele effectively:
1. Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing: As you mentioned, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing can help reduce pressure on the veins in the scrotum. If your job requires you to sit for extended periods, consider taking short breaks to stand and walk around.
2. Wear Supportive Underwear: Supportive underwear can help alleviate discomfort and provide support to the scrotum. Look for athletic supporters or compression shorts that can help keep everything in place.
3. Exercise Regularly: Engaging in regular physical activity can improve circulation and help maintain a healthy weight. However, avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercises that may exacerbate the condition. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling are generally beneficial.
4. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can increase pressure on the veins in the pelvic area, potentially worsening varicocele. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight.
5. Avoid Hot Baths and Saunas: Heat can increase blood flow to the scrotum and exacerbate varicocele symptoms. It may be wise to avoid hot baths, saunas, or any activities that expose the area to excessive heat.
6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in your condition. If you start to experience discomfort, pain, or any other concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
7. Consider Medical Evaluation: If you have concerns about fertility or if symptoms develop, it may be beneficial to consult with a urologist. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or surgical interventions if necessary.
Conclusion
In summary, while your current lack of discomfort is a positive sign, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive in managing your varicocele. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits and monitoring your condition, you can help minimize the risk of complications. If symptoms arise or if you have concerns about fertility, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can ensure that any changes in your condition are addressed promptly and effectively.
