Post-spinal surgery

Hello, four and a half years ago, I underwent surgery to correct scoliosis (with a thoracic curve of over 100 degrees and a lumbar curve of over 40 degrees).
Currently, my thoracic curve is around 30 degrees.
The surgery extended from the thoracic spine to the second lumbar vertebra.
I have mostly recovered post-surgery, and after I get accepted into university next year, I would like to play the violin.
However, my family is against it, as they are concerned that leaning to the left against the chin rest for extended periods may cause discomfort, and that my shoulders may not be able to handle the weight of the violin (approximately 500 grams).
I would like to ask: Is it impossible to play the violin after scoliosis surgery?

Hello, playing the violin will not affect scoliosis on the opposite side.
Thank you.

After undergoing scoliosis surgery, many patients wonder about the feasibility of returning to activities they love, such as playing the violin. Your situation, having had a significant correction from over 100 degrees to around 30 degrees in the thoracic spine, is commendable and indicates a successful surgical outcome. However, it is essential to consider several factors before resuming playing the violin.

Understanding Post-Surgery Recovery
1. Healing Process: After scoliosis surgery, the spine undergoes a healing process that can take several months to years. During this time, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding physical activity. While you may feel ready to engage in activities, your body may still be adjusting to the changes made during surgery.

2. Muscle Strength and Flexibility: Post-surgery, many patients experience changes in muscle strength and flexibility. Playing the violin requires a significant amount of upper body strength, particularly in the shoulders, arms, and back. You may need to engage in physical therapy or specific exercises to regain strength and flexibility in these areas before you can comfortably play the violin.

3. Pain and Discomfort: It is common for patients to experience some discomfort or pain after surgery, especially when engaging in activities that require prolonged positioning or strain on the back. Your family’s concerns about discomfort from leaning to the left against the chin rest of the violin are valid. It is essential to listen to your body and not push through pain.

Playing the Violin Post-Surgery
1. Consultation with Your Surgeon: Before making any decisions, it is crucial to consult with your orthopedic surgeon or a physical therapist who specializes in post-surgical rehabilitation. They can provide personalized advice based on your recovery progress and overall health.

2. Gradual Return: If cleared by your healthcare provider, consider a gradual return to playing the violin. Start with short practice sessions to assess how your body responds. Pay attention to any discomfort in your back, shoulders, or arms, and adjust your playing position as needed.

3. Ergonomic Adjustments: You may need to make ergonomic adjustments to your playing technique. This could include using a different chin rest or shoulder rest that provides better support and comfort. Experimenting with different positions and holds can help alleviate pressure on your spine.

4. Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate exercises that strengthen your back, shoulders, and core muscles. This will not only help support your spine but also improve your overall playing posture and endurance.

5. Listening to Your Body: It is vital to listen to your body. If you experience pain or discomfort while playing, it may be a sign to take a break or modify your approach.

Conclusion
In summary, playing the violin after scoliosis surgery is possible, but it requires careful consideration and preparation. With the right guidance from healthcare professionals, a gradual return to playing, and attention to your body’s signals, you can enjoy playing the violin again. Remember that every individual’s recovery is unique, and prioritizing your health and comfort is essential. Good luck with your future studies and your passion for music!
