Is it safe to have intercourse during menstruation?
I would like to ask the doctor, a few days ago I had intercourse with my boyfriend for the first time.
After we had sex, it was normal for me to experience some bleeding from my hymen, but the next day I had some cramping similar to menstrual pain.
Is this normal? However, after about a day, the pain subsided.
But then, about 3-4 days later, when my period started, the pain was worse than usual, and the flow was heavier than normal.
Could this be related to having sex?
Lastly, I want to ask if it is okay to have sexual activity during menstruation.
Specifically, on the 4th or 5th day of my period, do you recommend avoiding sexual activity during menstruation? I have read various articles; some say that having sex during menstruation is beneficial, while others warn of the risk of infection.
I would like to hear a more reliable recommendation (we always use condoms).

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, this menstrual cycle has been somewhat unusual, but it should still be within the normal range.
It is best to avoid sexual intercourse during menstruation, especially when the flow is heavy.
If it is almost finished, it generally does not have an impact.
Wishing you good health.

Having sex during menstruation is a topic that often raises questions regarding safety, comfort, and potential health risks. It is important to understand both the physiological aspects and the social perceptions surrounding this practice.
Firstly, from a medical standpoint, having sex during menstruation is generally considered safe for most individuals. The menstrual blood itself does not pose a significant health risk to either partner, and many people find that sexual activity can actually help alleviate menstrual cramps due to the release of endorphins and increased blood flow. However, it is crucial to consider a few factors.
1. Infection Risks: While the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is present regardless of the menstrual cycle, having sex during menstruation can increase the risk of certain infections. The cervix is slightly more open during menstruation, which may allow bacteria to enter the uterus more easily. This can potentially lead to infections such as bacterial vaginosis or pelvic inflammatory disease. Therefore, it is essential to maintain good hygiene and use protection, such as condoms, to minimize these risks.
2. Comfort and Consent: Comfort levels during menstruation can vary significantly from person to person. Some may experience heightened sensitivity or discomfort, while others may feel more relaxed and open to sexual activity. Communication with your partner about comfort levels and preferences is vital. If either partner feels uncomfortable, it is perfectly acceptable to postpone sexual activity until after the menstrual period.
3. Menstrual Flow: Engaging in sexual activity during menstruation can lead to a messier experience due to the presence of menstrual blood. Many couples find this unappealing, while others may not mind. Using towels or having sex in the shower can help manage this aspect.
4. Post-Sexual Activity Symptoms: In your case, experiencing cramping after your first sexual encounter could be attributed to several factors. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience some discomfort or cramping after intercourse, especially if it is a new experience. However, if the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues.
5. Menstrual Changes: If you notice changes in your menstrual cycle, such as increased pain or heavier flow after having sex, it could be related to various factors, including hormonal changes, stress, or even the physical act of intercourse itself. Again, if these changes are significant or concerning, seeking medical advice is recommended.
In summary, having sex during menstruation is generally safe, especially when using protection like condoms, which can help reduce the risk of infections. It is essential to communicate openly with your partner about comfort levels and any concerns. If you experience unusual symptoms or changes in your menstrual cycle, consulting a healthcare provider is the best course of action to ensure your health and well-being.
