Post-nasal drip
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing nasal congestion and post-nasal drip recently.
I've been taking medication for almost a month, but it hasn't improved.
I feel the mucus stuck between my nasal cavity and throat, and it's very uncomfortable when it drips down.
The phlegm is caused by the post-nasal drip.
I would like to ask the doctor what might be causing this, as I do not have other symptoms like runny nose or cough.
Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, the symptoms may be related to allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis.
If the symptoms persist without improvement, it is advisable to visit an otolaryngologist for examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Post-nasal drip is a common condition that occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the nose and throat. This can lead to a sensation of mucus dripping down the throat, which can be uncomfortable and irritating. Understanding the causes of post-nasal drip and exploring potential solutions can help alleviate the discomfort you are experiencing.
Causes of Post-Nasal Drip
1. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold can cause inflammation in the nasal passages, leading to increased mucus production. This excess mucus can drip down the throat, resulting in post-nasal drip.
2. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses, often due to infection, can lead to mucus buildup. This condition can be acute or chronic, and it may cause symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, and nasal congestion, along with post-nasal drip.
3. Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages that can obstruct airflow and mucus drainage, contributing to post-nasal drip.
4. Deviated Septum: A structural abnormality in the nasal cavity can affect mucus drainage, leading to accumulation and post-nasal drip.
5. Environmental Irritants: Exposure to smoke, strong odors, or pollutants can irritate the nasal passages, causing increased mucus production.
6. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and lead to increased mucus production, which may be perceived as post-nasal drip.
Solutions for Relief
1. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help clear mucus from the nasal passages. This can be particularly effective for those with allergies or sinusitis.
2. Antihistamines: If allergies are the underlying cause, over-the-counter antihistamines can help reduce mucus production and alleviate symptoms. However, some antihistamines can cause dryness, so it’s important to choose one that suits your needs.
3. Decongestants: These medications can help reduce nasal swelling and congestion, making it easier for mucus to drain. However, they should be used cautiously and not for extended periods.
4. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water can help moisten the nasal passages and loosen mucus, providing temporary relief.
5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Warm liquids, such as herbal teas or broths, can be particularly soothing.
6. Avoid Irritants: Reducing exposure to known allergens and irritants can help minimize symptoms. This may include using air purifiers, avoiding smoking, and keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons.
7. Consult an ENT Specialist: If symptoms persist despite over-the-counter treatments, it may be beneficial to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies, to identify any underlying issues such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps.
Conclusion
Post-nasal drip can be a frustrating condition, especially when it interferes with daily life. By understanding the potential causes and exploring various treatment options, you can find relief from the discomfort associated with this condition. If your symptoms do not improve with home remedies or over-the-counter medications, seeking professional medical advice is essential to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
