How to improve occlusal pain after root canal treatment?

Hello Dr.
Huang, I visited my usual clinic yesterday due to tooth pain, and the dentist examined me and said I need a root canal treatment.
Since this is my first time undergoing this procedure, I would like to ask the following related questions: (1) After the treatment, once the anesthesia wore off, I experienced more pain than before the treatment.
Taking painkillers provides some relief; is this normal? (2) The next morning, I noticed pain when biting down, which made it difficult for me to eat properly.
I have taken the pain medication prescribed by the dentist, but I still feel some discomfort when biting.
What can I do to resolve this issue? (3) Since this is my first root canal treatment and I have three more appointments to go, I would like to know what I should pay attention to regarding my teeth after the first visit.
(4) Additionally, how long can I expect the pain and discomfort to last? I appreciate your guidance on these questions, thank you.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your recent root canal treatment. It's completely understandable to have questions and worries, especially if this is your first experience with such a procedure. Let’s address your queries one by one.

1. Post-Treatment Pain: It is not uncommon for patients to experience increased pain after a root canal treatment, especially as the anesthesia wears off. The procedure can cause inflammation in the surrounding tissues, which may lead to discomfort or pain that can feel worse than the original issue. This is generally a normal part of the healing process. Over-the-counter pain relievers or those prescribed by your dentist can help manage this discomfort. If the pain persists or worsens significantly, it’s important to contact your dentist for further evaluation.

2. Bite Pain: Experiencing pain when biting down after a root canal is also a common issue. This can be due to several factors, including inflammation in the area, the way your bite aligns, or even the temporary filling that was placed. If the pain is significant enough to hinder your ability to eat, it’s advisable to return to your dentist. They may need to adjust your bite or check for any underlying issues that could be contributing to the discomfort.

3. Post-Treatment Care: After your first appointment, it’s crucial to follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. This may include taking prescribed medications, avoiding hard or sticky foods, and maintaining good oral hygiene. You should also keep an eye on any changes in pain levels or swelling and report these to your dentist. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the healing process and complete the treatment.

4. Duration of Pain and Discomfort: The duration of pain and discomfort can vary from person to person. Generally, mild discomfort may last a few days to a week after the procedure. However, if you notice that the pain is not improving or is worsening, it’s important to consult your dentist. They can assess whether there are any complications, such as an infection or an incomplete root canal, that may require additional treatment.

In summary, while some discomfort after a root canal is expected, it’s essential to communicate openly with your dentist about your symptoms. They are there to help you navigate this process and ensure that your treatment is successful. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider.

Wishing you a smooth recovery and relief from your discomfort soon!
Best regards,
