Pain on the inner side of the mouth?

It seems that my lower right area is experiencing pain due to an emerging wisdom tooth, which is causing discomfort when it bites against the inner gum of the mouth.
The inner side is painful, and the second molar has already been extracted, leaving only the last molar, which is also causing pain behind it.
I'm not entirely sure if it's due to the tooth eruption, but I can slightly see a bit of the tooth emerging.
The pain has persisted for two weeks.

Xiao Bao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/05/08

Hello, Xiao Bao: If your wisdom teeth are about to erupt or have already erupted but are misaligned, it can make it difficult to clean the gums around the wisdom teeth properly, leading to gum issues.
It is advisable to consult a dentist for further examination.

Understanding pain in the inner mouth, especially related to wisdom teeth and other dental issues, can be quite complex. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing discomfort in the area where your wisdom tooth is trying to erupt, particularly affecting the soft tissue of your inner cheek. This can often lead to pain and irritation, especially if the tooth is impacted or if there is not enough space in your mouth for it to emerge properly.

Wisdom Teeth and Pain:
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. If they do not have enough space to grow properly, they can become impacted, meaning they are trapped beneath the gum line or against adjacent teeth. This can lead to a variety of issues, including pain, swelling, and infection. The pain you are experiencing could be due to the wisdom tooth pressing against the adjacent second molar or the soft tissue in your mouth.
Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth:
Common symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth include:
- Pain in the back of the mouth
- Swelling and tenderness in the gums
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Pain when biting or chewing
In your case, since you mentioned that the second molar has already been extracted, the remaining molar may be shifting or tilting due to the absence of the second molar, which can exacerbate the discomfort. The pressure from the wisdom tooth trying to erupt can also cause the surrounding gum tissue to become inflamed and painful.

Recommendations for Relief:
1. Consult a Dentist: It is crucial to see a dentist or an oral surgeon who can evaluate the situation properly. They may take X-rays to determine the position of the wisdom tooth and assess whether it is impacted or if there are other underlying issues.

2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage the pain temporarily. However, this should not replace professional dental advice.

3. Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Gently brushing the area and using an antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce inflammation and prevent infection.

4. Warm Salt Water Rinse: Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help soothe the inflamed tissue and promote healing.

5. Avoid Irritating Foods: Try to avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the area further.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the pain persists, worsens, or if you develop fever, swelling, or difficulty swallowing, seek immediate dental care.

Potential Need for Extraction:
If the wisdom tooth is indeed impacted and causing significant pain, your dentist may recommend extraction. This is a common procedure and can alleviate the pain and prevent further complications, such as infection or damage to adjacent teeth.

In summary, the pain you are experiencing in your inner mouth is likely related to the eruption of your wisdom tooth and the absence of the second molar. It is essential to consult with a dental professional for a thorough examination and appropriate treatment to address your discomfort effectively.
