Is it necessary to frequently pick your nose?
I really love picking my nose.
In the past, I often picked until I bled.
Now, due to the pandemic, I've been taught not to touch my mouth, nose, or eyes carelessly, so I've resisted the urge to pick my nose.
After a while, I realized that not picking my nose doesn't cause any issues.
I searched online and found mixed opinions; some reports say that boogers don't need to be picked, similar to earwax, which doesn't require daily cleaning.
Some suggest using nasal irrigation, while others recommend cotton swabs.
I'm curious and want to ask a doctor online: Is it true that I don't need to pick my nose every day? I used to think that my nostrils needed daily cleaning like taking a shower, but now I can go several days without picking my nose and feel fine.
Sometimes I feel like there's a booger in my nostrils, but after a while, that feeling disappears (does it fall out on its own?).

Hello, under normal circumstances, the nose has a self-cleaning function, and there is no need to deliberately clean the inside of the nasal cavity with hands or cotton swabs every day, as this may lead to inflammation or infection.
It is sufficient to clean the external area with a towel while showering.
Only in cases where there is significant crusting due to inflammation or skin breakdown would we recommend nasal irrigation or using a cotton swab with medication for cleaning.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Nasal hygiene is an important aspect of overall health, but the need to pick your nose, or remove nasal mucus, is often misunderstood. The act of picking your nose can lead to various health issues, including nasal injuries, infections, and even the introduction of harmful bacteria into your body. However, it’s essential to understand the role of nasal mucus and how to manage it effectively without resorting to habitual nose-picking.
Nasal mucus, commonly referred to as "boogers" or "nose crust," serves several important functions. It helps to trap dust, allergens, and pathogens, preventing them from entering the respiratory system. Mucus also keeps the nasal passages moist, which is crucial for proper respiratory function. The body naturally produces mucus, and it can dry out and form crusts, especially in dry environments or during illness.
Many people mistakenly believe that they need to remove nasal mucus daily, similar to how they might clean their ears. However, the reality is that the body has mechanisms to manage mucus naturally. When you refrain from picking your nose, the mucus can often dislodge itself or be expelled through normal nasal functions, such as sneezing or blowing your nose. This is a natural process that does not require manual intervention.
If you find that you have excessive nasal mucus or crusting, there are healthier alternatives to picking your nose. Here are some recommendations:
1. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help to moisten the nasal passages and clear out excess mucus. This method is particularly effective for individuals suffering from allergies or sinus issues.
2. Humidifiers: Keeping the air in your home moist can prevent mucus from drying out and forming crusts. A humidifier can be especially beneficial in dry climates or during winter months when indoor heating can dry out the air.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids helps to thin mucus, making it easier for your body to manage it without the need for picking.
4. Avoid Irritants: Smoke, strong odors, and allergens can increase mucus production. Reducing exposure to these irritants can help maintain a healthier nasal environment.
5. Gentle Nose Blowing: If you feel the need to clear your nose, gently blowing it is a safer alternative to picking. This can help expel mucus without causing injury to the nasal lining.
6. Consult a Specialist: If you experience persistent nasal congestion, discomfort, or excessive mucus production, it may be worthwhile to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can assess for underlying conditions such as allergies, sinusitis, or anatomical issues that may contribute to your symptoms.
In conclusion, while it may be a common habit to pick your nose, it is not necessary for maintaining nasal hygiene. The body has natural mechanisms for managing mucus, and there are healthier alternatives to address any discomfort you may experience. By adopting better nasal care practices, you can avoid the risks associated with nose-picking while still ensuring your nasal passages remain clear and healthy.
