Breast Changes After Ovulation Induction for IVF - Obstetrics and Gynecology

After receiving ovulation induction injections, small pea-sized lumps can be felt in the areola?

In order to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF), I had two egg retrieval surgeries.
On the 11th day after the second injection, I felt a small lump about the size of a soybean on the left areola, approximately at a 45-degree angle below the nipple.
The lump is located very superficially and can be felt without pressure; visually, it appears to have a slight protrusion but shows no obvious abnormalities.
What could this issue be? If I need to see a doctor, when would be the best time to go, considering that I am currently in the period following my first menstrual cycle after the egg retrieval?

Breast changes after ovulation induction for in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be a common occurrence due to the hormonal fluctuations that accompany the treatment. When undergoing ovulation induction, medications such as gonadotropins or clomiphene citrate are often used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These medications can lead to various physiological changes in the body, including the breasts.

The lump you described, located near the left nipple, could be attributed to several factors related to the hormonal changes induced by the IVF process. One possibility is that the lump is a benign breast cyst or a fibroadenoma, both of which are common and usually harmless. Hormonal treatments can cause breast tissue to become denser or lead to the formation of cysts, which may feel like small lumps.
Another potential cause of the lump could be related to hormonal stimulation affecting the breast tissue, leading to increased glandular activity. This can result in tenderness, swelling, or the formation of small lumps in the breast. It is also worth noting that during the menstrual cycle, especially around ovulation and menstruation, breast tissue can undergo changes that may cause lumps to form temporarily.

Given that you are currently in the post-egg retrieval phase and experiencing your first menstrual period after the procedure, it is advisable to monitor the lump for any changes. If the lump persists beyond your menstrual cycle, increases in size, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discharge, or changes in the skin over the breast, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider.
In terms of timing for a medical evaluation, if the lump does not resolve after your menstrual period or if you have any concerns about it, scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider within a few weeks would be appropriate. They may perform a clinical breast exam and, if necessary, imaging studies such as a breast ultrasound or mammogram to assess the lump further.

It is essential to remember that while breast changes can be concerning, many lumps are benign, especially in the context of hormonal treatments like those used in IVF. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice if you have any doubts or concerns about your health. Regular breast self-exams and awareness of your body can help you detect any changes early, allowing for timely evaluation and peace of mind.
In summary, the lump you are experiencing may be related to the hormonal changes from your IVF treatment. Keep an eye on it, and if it persists or worsens, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and well-being are paramount, especially during this significant time in your fertility journey.
