Bowel-related issues?
Doctor, I have been waking up in the morning to have bowel movements that are smooth and soft.
However, after finishing, I feel the urge to go again shortly after, and this can happen 3 to 4 times in a row, but the amount is not much.
Is this normal? Could it be related to the autonomic nervous system or colorectal cancer?
Ms. Yu, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/05/13

Hello! Loose stools, frequent bowel movements, and an incomplete feeling after defecation can be related to diet and the autonomic nervous system.
Excessive emotional stress can lead to overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, which disrupts normal gastrointestinal function, resulting in gastrointestinal disorders.
Colorectal cancer is associated with genetics, hereditary factors, low-fiber high-fat diets, and obesity.
If symptoms persist, it is important to follow up with outpatient examinations.
Wishing you health and safety! Sincerely, Dr.

Morning bowel movements can be a common occurrence for many individuals and are generally considered normal, especially if the stools are soft and easy to pass. The frequency and consistency of bowel movements can vary widely from person to person, and what is normal for one individual may not be for another. In your case, waking up in the morning and having multiple bowel movements that are soft and easy to pass is typically not a cause for concern.
The gastrointestinal system is influenced by various factors, including diet, hydration, physical activity, and even stress levels. The body's circadian rhythm can also play a role in bowel habits, as many people find that they have a natural urge to have a bowel movement in the morning. This can be due to the body's internal clock signaling the digestive system to become more active after a night of rest.
Regarding your concern about the autonomic nervous system, it is true that the autonomic nervous system regulates many involuntary bodily functions, including digestion. Stress and anxiety can affect gut motility and may lead to changes in bowel habits. If you are experiencing increased stress or anxiety, it could potentially contribute to your bowel movements. However, if your stools are consistently soft and you do not experience any other concerning symptoms, such as blood in the stool, significant changes in weight, or persistent abdominal pain, it is less likely that your symptoms are related to a serious condition like colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer typically presents with more significant symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits (e.g., diarrhea or constipation lasting more than a few weeks), blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal discomfort. If you are not experiencing these symptoms, the likelihood of your bowel habits being related to colorectal cancer is low.
However, if you continue to have concerns about your bowel movements or if there are any changes in your symptoms, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation, including a review of your medical history, dietary habits, and any other symptoms you may be experiencing. They may also recommend tests if necessary to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, having multiple soft bowel movements in the morning is generally normal and can be influenced by various factors, including diet and the body's natural rhythms. If you have any ongoing concerns or if your symptoms change, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress can also contribute positively to your digestive health.
