Abdominal Bloating: Is It a Sign of Colon Cancer? - Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Rectal issues

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about my frequent left abdominal bloating, which can be painful.
Previously, I would have hard stools every two to three days, followed by a couple of softer bowel movements.
However, recently my stools have been consistently loose, sometimes thin and soft, and I can't finish in one go, needing two to three attempts.
The later bowel movements are usually small in volume, but I do have a bowel movement every day on average.
Could this be a sign of colon cancer, or is it possible that my anxiety is causing these symptoms? Thank you.

Ms. Yu, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/05/15

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

You can visit the gastroenterology outpatient clinic for a colonoscopy or a fecal occult blood test.

Abdominal bloating can be a common and often benign symptom, but it can also raise concerns, especially when associated with changes in bowel habits or discomfort. In your case, the left abdominal bloating accompanied by pain, along with changes in your stool consistency, warrants a closer look.
Firstly, let's address the potential connection between your symptoms and colon cancer. Colon cancer can present with various symptoms, including changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, and bloating. However, it is essential to note that these symptoms can also be attributed to a range of other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even dietary factors.
The fact that you have experienced hard stools followed by softer, more frequent bowel movements could suggest a change in your gastrointestinal function. This fluctuation may be due to dietary changes, stress, or even anxiety, which can significantly impact bowel habits. Anxiety and stress can lead to increased gut sensitivity, resulting in symptoms like bloating and discomfort.
In terms of your specific symptoms, the left-sided bloating and pain could be related to gas accumulation or changes in bowel motility. If you have been experiencing these symptoms consistently, it may be beneficial to keep a food diary to identify any potential dietary triggers. Foods that are high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, and certain vegetables, can sometimes lead to increased gas production. Additionally, lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity can also contribute to bloating and changes in stool consistency.

While it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of colon cancer, especially with the changes in your bowel habits, it is crucial to consider other factors. If you have a family history of colon cancer or if your symptoms persist or worsen, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. A colonoscopy may be recommended to rule out any significant issues, especially if you are over the age of 45 or have other risk factors.

In summary, while your symptoms could potentially be related to colon cancer, they are more likely to be associated with benign conditions such as IBS or dietary factors. However, given the changes in your bowel habits and the presence of pain, it is essential to seek medical advice for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential gastrointestinal issues, so do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance.
