A hard lump on the right side near the rib cage?
Recently, I have developed a hard lump on the right side near my ribs, which is painful and has some blood when pressed.
I would like to know what possible conditions this could be.
Could it be 1.
folliculitis, 2.
sebaceous cyst, or 3.
dermatofibroma? Or are there other possibilities? It has been 3 days.

When encountering a hard lump near the ribs, particularly one that is painful or has associated bleeding, it is essential to consider several potential causes. The three conditions you mentioned—folliculitis, sebaceous cysts (often referred to as epidermoid cysts), and lipomas—are indeed possibilities, but there are other conditions that could also be responsible for such a lump.
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial or fungal infections. It can result in red, swollen bumps that may be painful and can sometimes drain pus or blood if they become severe. If the lump is tender and has a history of irritation or infection, folliculitis could be a likely cause.
2. Sebaceous Cyst (Epidermoid Cyst): These are benign lumps that form when sebaceous glands become blocked. They are usually painless, but if they become inflamed or infected, they can become tender and may drain a thick, yellowish substance. If the cyst is located near the ribs and has become inflamed, it could present as a hard lump.
3. Lipoma: This is a benign tumor made of fatty tissue. Lipomas are generally soft to the touch and movable under the skin. They are usually painless and do not cause any symptoms unless they press on nearby structures. If the lump feels hard and is not movable, it may not be a lipoma.
4. Other Possibilities:
- Hematoma: If there has been any trauma to the area, a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) could form, leading to a hard lump that may be painful and discolored.
- Abscess: An abscess is a collection of pus that can occur due to infection. It can feel firm and may be accompanied by redness and warmth in the surrounding skin.
- Costochondritis: This is inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. While it typically causes pain rather than a lump, inflammation in the area could create a sensation of swelling.
- Tumors: Although less common, both benign and malignant tumors can present as hard lumps in the rib area. If there is any concern about the nature of the lump, further evaluation is warranted.
Given that the lump has been present for three days and is associated with bleeding, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to determine the nature of the lump. They may also consider a biopsy if there is any suspicion of malignancy or if the lump does not resolve with conservative measures.
In summary, while folliculitis, sebaceous cysts, and lipomas are potential causes of a hard lump near the ribs, it is essential to consider other possibilities, including hematomas, abscesses, costochondritis, and tumors. Prompt evaluation by a healthcare provider is recommended to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
