Could you please tell me if this is considered a phimosis?
Hello, doctor! After dinner on May 16, 2020, I noticed something unusual in my lower region.
While taking a shower, I discovered that the skin on the underside of the glans, near the urethra, suddenly became swollen.
Currently, it does not affect urination or erection, and I have been keeping the area clean.
Could this be caused by wearing long pants for an extended period? Please advise if I need to seek medical attention or if it will heal on its own! I have attached a photo: https://thumbsnap.com/1T4ywJWB

Swollen foreskin, or preputial swelling, can indeed be a cause for concern, and it is important to understand the potential underlying issues that may be contributing to this condition. The foreskin, or prepuce, is the fold of skin that covers the glans of the penis, and swelling in this area can arise from various causes, including infections, inflammation, trauma, or allergic reactions.
One common cause of foreskin swelling is a condition known as balanitis, which is the inflammation of the glans penis. Balanitis can occur due to poor hygiene, leading to the accumulation of smegma (a combination of dead skin cells and oils), or it can be caused by infections, including bacterial or fungal infections. In some cases, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also lead to inflammation and swelling of the foreskin.
Another potential cause of swelling could be a condition called phimosis, where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the glans. This can lead to inflammation and swelling, especially if there is an infection present. Phimosis can be a normal condition in young boys, but if it persists into adulthood, it may require medical evaluation.
Allergic reactions to soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area can also lead to swelling and irritation of the foreskin. If you have recently changed any personal care products, this could be a contributing factor.
In your case, since you mentioned that the swelling does not affect urination or erection, it may not be an immediate emergency. However, it is still advisable to monitor the situation closely. If the swelling persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, redness, discharge, or fever, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination, take a detailed history, and possibly conduct tests to determine the underlying cause of the swelling.
In terms of self-care, maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water can help prevent infections. Avoiding irritants, such as harsh soaps or lotions, is also advisable. If you suspect that the swelling may be due to an allergic reaction, consider stopping the use of any new products you have recently introduced.
In conclusion, while swollen foreskin may not always indicate a serious problem, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure appropriate treatment. If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and care.
