Sore throat with a sensation of a foreign body?

Hello Doctor: Two years ago, I underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and took 30 mg of Tegaserod for about three months.
Until six months ago, I started experiencing symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux again.
Currently, I feel a sensation of something stuck in my throat, and sometimes swallowing saliva causes pain.
Since I am currently studying abroad and due to the impact of the pandemic, it is not very convenient for me to see a doctor.
I would like to ask you if this could be serious and if there is a possibility of cancer after two years.
Thank you very much for your response.

The chances are slim; it is recommended to reduce tea/coffee/sweet and sour foods, and to take antacids (which can be purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies).

Throat pain and the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can be concerning symptoms, especially when they persist over time. Based on your description, it seems that you have a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can contribute to throat discomfort. GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can manifest as a sore throat, a sensation of something stuck in the throat, and even pain when swallowing.

Given that you have experienced these symptoms for an extended period, it is essential to consider several factors. First, while GERD is a common cause of throat pain, other conditions could also be responsible. These include esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx), or even allergies that can cause throat irritation. In some cases, post-nasal drip from sinus issues can lead to throat discomfort as well.

Regarding your concern about the possibility of cancer, it is understandable to feel anxious about such symptoms. However, the likelihood of throat cancer in someone your age, especially with a history of GERD, is relatively low. Throat cancer typically presents with more severe symptoms, such as significant weight loss, persistent hoarseness, or a lump in the neck. Nonetheless, any persistent symptoms that cause concern should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Since you mentioned that you are studying abroad and have had difficulty accessing medical care due to the pandemic, I recommend seeking a telehealth consultation if possible. Many healthcare providers now offer virtual appointments, which can be a convenient way to discuss your symptoms and receive guidance without needing to visit a clinic in person.

In the meantime, there are some self-care measures you can take to alleviate your symptoms. These include:
1. Dietary Modifications: Avoid foods and beverages that trigger your GERD symptoms, such as spicy foods, citrus, caffeine, and alcohol. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also help.

2. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help soothe your throat and reduce the sensation of dryness or irritation.

3. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may help manage GERD symptoms. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

4. Throat Lozenges: Sucking on throat lozenges can provide temporary relief from throat discomfort.

5. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your living space can help keep the air moist, which may alleviate throat dryness.

6. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that may exacerbate your throat symptoms.

In conclusion, while your symptoms warrant attention, they are not necessarily indicative of a severe condition such as cancer, especially given your history of GERD. However, it is crucial to seek medical advice to rule out other potential causes and receive appropriate treatment. If your symptoms persist or worsen, please prioritize finding a way to consult with a healthcare professional. Your health and peace of mind are important, and timely medical evaluation can provide clarity and reassurance.
