Throat issues and ingestion problems?
Hello, doctor.
I'm not sure if my cold has not fully resolved.
Initially, I had a sore throat, and now only one side still hurts.
I plan to visit an ENT specialist tomorrow.
However, while eating just now, I accidentally swallowed something hard, possibly a piece of broccoli or a small fish bone from the salmon.
I felt it pass through my esophagus.
Although I didn't experience pain while eating or drinking afterward, my tonsils still hurt when I cough up phlegm.
I would like to ask if this could be something stuck in my esophagus or trachea, or is it more likely just that my cold hasn't improved yet? I'm really worried about the possibility of a fish bone being lodged or piercing my esophagus.
However, today I only went to the emergency room, and my family said if it were truly stuck, I wouldn't be able to continue eating and would be in severe pain, which is not the case.
I’m unsure if the pain is worse than my cold symptoms.
Could you please tell me what symptoms typically occur if a fish bone gets stuck? Also, if it were to reach the stomach, would it be digested? Additionally, I noticed a small white spot near my tonsils that hurts when my tongue touches it.
I'm concerned it might be a deep neck infection or cancer, especially since I've been on medication for almost a week.
Initially, both sides of my throat hurt, but now it's mainly the right side, and I still have phlegm and nasal discharge.
I apologize for my anxiety, and I appreciate your understanding if my message is unclear.
Thank you for your response.

Hello, based on your description, it seems that your symptoms are likely caused by a cold and not due to any foreign object being lodged.
As for the white area you mentioned, I haven't seen it directly, so it's difficult to assess; however, based on your description, it is unlikely to be related to cancer.
If your throat symptoms persist, it would be advisable to visit an otolaryngology clinic for a further examination of your throat.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing a combination of throat pain and anxiety about potentially swallowing a foreign object, such as a fish bone. Let's break down your concerns and provide some clarity regarding throat pain, the risks associated with swallowing foreign objects, and what you might expect moving forward.
Understanding Throat Pain
Throat pain can arise from various causes, including viral infections (like the common cold), bacterial infections (such as strep throat), allergies, or irritants. Given that you mentioned having a sore throat that has not fully resolved, it is possible that you are still dealing with the aftermath of a viral infection. The fact that you are experiencing pain on one side of your throat could indicate localized inflammation, possibly affecting the tonsils or surrounding tissues.
Swallowing Foreign Objects
When it comes to swallowing foreign objects, such as fish bones, there are a few key points to consider:
1. Symptoms of a Foreign Object in the Throat or Esophagus: If a foreign object gets lodged in the throat or esophagus, you might experience symptoms such as:
- Sharp pain in the throat or chest
- Difficulty swallowing
- A sensation of something being stuck in your throat
- Excessive drooling
- Coughing or gagging
2. What Happens if a Fish Bone is Swallowed: If a fish bone passes through the esophagus and reaches the stomach, it is generally considered safe, as the stomach's acidic environment can help break down small, non-sharp objects. However, if the bone is large or sharp, it could potentially cause injury to the esophagus or stomach lining.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: If you experience severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or if you feel that something is stuck in your throat, it is important to seek medical attention. An emergency room or urgent care facility can perform imaging studies, such as X-rays, to determine if there is a foreign object present and whether any intervention is needed.
Your Current Symptoms
Regarding your current symptoms, the pain you feel when swallowing phlegm could be due to inflammation in the throat or tonsils, which may not be directly related to the potential swallowing of a fish bone. The presence of a white spot near your tonsils could indicate a few things, including:
- Tonsillitis: Inflammation of the tonsils, often due to infection.
- Peritonsillar Abscess: A collection of pus near the tonsils, which can cause significant pain and swelling.
- Other Infections: Such as strep throat or other viral infections.
Recommendations
1. Visit an ENT Specialist: Since you mentioned planning to see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, this is a good step. They can examine your throat thoroughly and provide a diagnosis based on your symptoms.
2. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you develop new symptoms, such as high fever, difficulty breathing, or worsening pain, seek medical attention promptly.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to soothe your throat and help with any irritation.
4. Avoid Irritants: Try to avoid smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, as these can exacerbate throat pain.
5. Manage Anxiety: It’s understandable to feel anxious about your symptoms. Consider relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, to help manage your anxiety while you wait for your appointment.
In summary, while your throat pain may be related to a lingering infection, it’s essential to address your concerns about swallowing a foreign object. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the best course of action and peace of mind. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
