There is a fecal odor on the body?
Hello doctor, since last week, I have been experiencing a smell similar to that of diarrhea coming from my body.
Whenever I get close to others, they can immediately smell it.
I make sure to clean myself thoroughly after using the restroom, often wiping several times to ensure I am clean before leaving.
Sometimes, I even wash the area around my anus with clean water, but the smell returns shortly after.
I would like to ask you, doctor, what could be causing this? Thank you!

Unpleasant body odor, particularly one that resembles the smell associated with diarrhea, can be quite distressing and may indicate underlying gastrointestinal issues. The symptoms you describe suggest that there may be an imbalance in your digestive system, which could be due to several factors, including diet, gastrointestinal infections, malabsorption syndromes, or even conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Firstly, it's important to consider your diet. Certain foods can lead to increased gas production and unpleasant odors. Foods that are high in sulfur, such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cabbage), can contribute to foul-smelling gas. Additionally, a diet high in processed foods or sugars can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to gastrointestinal discomfort and odor.
Another possibility is a gastrointestinal infection. Bacterial infections, such as those caused by Clostridium difficile or other pathogens, can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and foul-smelling stools. If you have experienced any recent changes in your bowel habits, such as increased frequency or changes in consistency, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Malabsorption syndromes, such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance, can also lead to unpleasant odors. In these conditions, the body is unable to properly absorb certain nutrients, leading to fermentation in the intestines, which can produce foul-smelling gas and stool. If you suspect that you may have a food intolerance or malabsorption issue, keeping a food diary and discussing it with your doctor can be helpful.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is another condition that could be contributing to your symptoms. IBS is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, which can include diarrhea or constipation. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate IBS symptoms, leading to increased gastrointestinal discomfort and odor. If you find that your symptoms worsen during periods of stress, it may be beneficial to explore stress management techniques or speak with a mental health professional.
In terms of hygiene, while it’s commendable that you are taking steps to maintain cleanliness, it’s important to note that excessive washing can sometimes irritate the skin and lead to further issues. Using gentle, unscented soaps and ensuring that the area is thoroughly dried after washing can help maintain skin integrity and reduce odor.
If the unpleasant odor persists despite good hygiene practices and dietary adjustments, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider may recommend tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to identify any underlying conditions. They may also refer you to a gastroenterologist for specialized care.
In summary, the unpleasant body odor you are experiencing could be linked to dietary choices, gastrointestinal infections, malabsorption syndromes, or conditions like IBS. Keeping a detailed record of your symptoms, dietary habits, and any associated factors can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. It’s essential to address these symptoms promptly to ensure that any underlying issues are identified and treated appropriately.
