Red Spots on the Frenulum After Circumcision: What You Need to Know - Urology

After the foreskin is retracted, there are red spots on the foreskin near the junction with the glans?

Hello, doctor.
A month ago, I had my foreskin removed, and I noticed two red patches near the seam on the inner side of the foreskin close to the glans.
I checked again while showering, and the patches are still present.
There is no pain or itching.
What could this symptom be? Do I need to see a urologist?

Hello: If there is no redness, pain, or broken skin, keep the area clean and avoid using soap or body wash.
Remember to dry the area thoroughly.
It could be related to skin pigmentation.
Additionally, since it has been a month without improvement, you may consider consulting a urologist at a hospital.
Wishing you good health.

Red spots on the frenulum after circumcision can be concerning, but it's important to understand the context and potential causes. After circumcision, the area around the frenulum, which is the fold of tissue on the underside of the penis, can undergo various changes as it heals. The presence of red spots may be due to several factors, including irritation, inflammation, or even normal healing processes.

1. Normal Healing: After circumcision, the skin in the area may appear red or irritated as it heals. This is a common occurrence and can last for several weeks. The absence of pain or itching is a positive sign, suggesting that there may not be an active infection or severe irritation.

2. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, the use of soaps, lotions, or other hygiene products can cause irritation or an allergic reaction, leading to redness in the area. If you've recently changed any products you use for personal hygiene, consider reverting to your previous products to see if the condition improves.

3. Infection: While the absence of pain and itching makes an infection less likely, it is still a possibility. Infections can sometimes present with redness without significant discomfort. If the spots become more pronounced, change in appearance, or if you develop any additional symptoms (such as discharge, increased sensitivity, or fever), it would be prudent to seek medical attention.

4. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign bumps that can appear on the frenulum and are often mistaken for something concerning. They are a normal anatomical variant and do not require treatment.

5. Other Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as lichen planus or other inflammatory skin conditions can also present with red spots. These would typically require a dermatologist's evaluation for proper diagnosis and management.

Given that the red spots have persisted for a month without any accompanying symptoms like pain or itching, it may not be an urgent issue. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially after a surgical procedure like circumcision.
Recommendation: It would be advisable to schedule an appointment with a urologist or a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough examination and provide a definitive diagnosis. They may also recommend treatments if necessary, or simply reassure you that the spots are a normal part of the healing process.
In summary, while the presence of red spots on the frenulum after circumcision can be concerning, it is often a normal part of healing. However, if you have any doubts or if the condition changes, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
