Experiencing Frequent Periods: What Should I Do? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Share to:

I have had my period twice in the past two months?

Hello doctor, my menstrual period last month was from April 7 to April 12 and then from April 22 to April 28.
I thought it might be due to stress, so I didn't pay much attention.
However, this month, my period started again from May 14 to May 20 and then from May 30, and it is still ongoing.
The intervals between them are quite short.
I haven't taken any medication or had any sexual intercourse.
There are no gynecologists nearby for me to consult.
What should I do?

Li, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/06/02

Dr. Huang Zifei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dear Miss Li,
Menstrual irregularities can have many potential causes, including structural issues or hormonal imbalances.
These conditions require a personal consultation with a gynecologist for proper examination.
Given the distress you are experiencing, please discuss this with your parents and have them take you to a gynecologist for further evaluation and treatment.

More Info

Experiencing frequent periods, also known as polymenorrhea, can be concerning and may indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. It’s important to understand that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, lifestyle changes, and medical conditions. Given your situation, here are some steps you can take to address your concerns:
1. Track Your Cycle: Keep a detailed record of your menstrual cycles, including the start and end dates, flow intensity, and any accompanying symptoms such as pain, mood changes, or physical discomfort. This information can be helpful for healthcare providers when you are able to consult with them.

2. Evaluate Stress Levels: Stress is a common factor that can disrupt menstrual cycles. Consider your current stressors, whether they are related to work, school, or personal life. Engaging in stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or regular physical exercise can help manage stress levels and potentially stabilize your cycle.

3. Lifestyle Factors: Assess your lifestyle choices, including diet, exercise, and sleep patterns. A balanced diet rich in nutrients, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep can positively impact your hormonal balance and overall health. Avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol, and smoking, as these can also affect your menstrual cycle.

4. Consider Hormonal Factors: Hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular periods. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other endocrine issues can cause changes in your menstrual cycle. If you have any other symptoms, such as weight changes, acne, or excessive hair growth, it may be worth considering these factors.

5. Seek Medical Advice: While you mentioned that there are no nearby gynecologists, it is crucial to seek medical advice when possible. You can consider telemedicine options, where you can consult with a healthcare provider online. They can provide guidance, recommend tests, or prescribe medications if necessary.

6. Over-the-Counter Options: If you are experiencing discomfort due to your periods, over-the-counter pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate cramps and discomfort. However, these should not be used as a long-term solution without consulting a healthcare provider.

7. Monitor for Other Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may accompany your frequent periods, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or unusual discharge. If you experience any of these, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

8. Consider a Support System: Talk to friends or family members about what you are experiencing. Sometimes, sharing your concerns can provide emotional support and help you feel less isolated in your situation.

In summary, while experiencing frequent periods can be distressing, there are several steps you can take to manage your situation. Keeping track of your cycles, evaluating your stress levels, making lifestyle adjustments, and seeking medical advice when possible are all important steps. Remember that your health is a priority, and addressing these concerns with a healthcare professional is essential for your well-being.
