The tonsils appear to be inflamed or infected?
Hello Doctor: Last week, I had a problem with tonsil stones.
I used a cotton swab to remove some of the stones.
However, after a day or two, my tonsils became slightly swollen and inflamed.
For the past couple of days, I've also noticed a mild fever in the morning, but I don't have a headache or sore throat.
Could this be due to tonsillitis causing a low-grade fever?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: It is indeed possible that the fever is related to tonsillitis.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water and monitor the situation.
If the fever persists or the pain does not improve, it is recommended to seek medical attention for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Tonsil inflammation, commonly referred to as tonsillitis, is an infection or inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of your throat. Understanding the causes and symptoms of tonsil inflammation is essential for effective management and treatment.
Causes of Tonsil Inflammation
Tonsillitis can be caused by various factors, including:
1. Viral Infections: The most common cause of tonsillitis is viral infections, such as the common cold, influenza, or Epstein-Barr virus (which causes mononucleosis). These viruses can lead to inflammation of the tonsils.
2. Bacterial Infections: Streptococcus bacteria, particularly Group A Streptococcus, are well-known culprits of bacterial tonsillitis, often referred to as strep throat. This type of infection can lead to more severe symptoms and complications if left untreated.
3. Other Factors: Allergies, irritants (such as smoke or pollution), and even chronic conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can contribute to tonsil inflammation.
Symptoms of Tonsil Inflammation
The symptoms of tonsillitis can vary depending on whether the cause is viral or bacterial. Common symptoms include:
- Swollen Tonsils: The tonsils may appear red and swollen, sometimes with white or yellow patches or spots.
- Sore Throat: While you mentioned not experiencing throat pain, this is a common symptom and may vary in intensity.
- Difficulty Swallowing: Swelling can make swallowing painful or difficult.
- Fever: A low-grade fever is common, and in some cases, it can be higher, especially with bacterial infections.
- Bad Breath: Tonsil stones, which you mentioned, can contribute to bad breath due to the accumulation of bacteria and debris.
- Ear Pain: Sometimes, pain can radiate to the ears due to shared nerve pathways.
Your Situation
In your case, the presence of tonsil stones and subsequent swelling of the tonsils, along with a mild fever, suggests that you may be experiencing tonsillitis. The mild fever you are experiencing could indeed be a response to the inflammation of the tonsils. Even in the absence of severe throat pain or headaches, the body can still react to infection with a slight increase in temperature as part of the immune response.
Recommendations
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, which can help soothe the throat and keep mucus thin.
2. Rest: Ensure you get adequate rest to support your immune system in fighting off the infection.
3. Saltwater Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate symptoms.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop more severe symptoms such as high fever, difficulty breathing, or severe pain, it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a throat culture or rapid strep test to determine if a bacterial infection is present and whether antibiotics are necessary.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may indicate tonsil inflammation, it is crucial to monitor your condition and seek medical advice if necessary. Early intervention can prevent complications and promote a quicker recovery.
