Keep the glans dry?

Hello doctor, I have been experiencing glans inflammation for two weeks.
During the first week, I visited a clinic and took medication and applied ointment, but it didn't help.
I then went to a large hospital where the doctor examined me for less than five seconds and diagnosed me with balanoposthitis.
I received medication and ointment that seemed effective, but the healing process is slow.
One of my main concerns is that the doctor advised me to expose the glans, but after applying the ointment, I am afraid it will get on my underwear.
Therefore, I only expose the glans at night while sleeping.
During work hours, after applying the ointment, I still keep the glans covered with the foreskin.
The surface of the glans feels like it is slowly improving, but there hasn't been much progress around the glans area.
May I ask if it is possible to cover the glans with gauze or tissue after applying the ointment to keep it dry, since I am worried about the ointment getting on my underwear?

Managing balanitis, particularly when it persists despite treatment, can be challenging and requires careful attention to hygiene and medication application. Balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis), can be caused by various factors including infections, irritants, or underlying health conditions such as diabetes. Here are some tips to help manage your condition and keep the glans dry and comfortable.

1. Follow Medical Advice: It’s crucial to adhere to the treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare provider. If you’ve been given topical medications, ensure you apply them as directed. If you feel that the treatment is not effective, do not hesitate to follow up with your doctor for further evaluation.

2. Keep the Area Dry: Moisture can exacerbate inflammation and irritation. After applying any topical medication, it is advisable to allow the area to dry completely before covering it. If you are concerned about the medication staining your underwear, using a clean, soft gauze or tissue to cover the glans can be a good idea. This can help absorb any excess moisture and prevent the medication from coming into contact with your clothing.

3. Avoid Irritants: Be mindful of products that may irritate the area, such as scented soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. Opt for mild, unscented products to minimize irritation. Additionally, avoid tight-fitting underwear and pants that can trap moisture and heat.

4. Practice Good Hygiene: Gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap daily. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. After washing, pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as this can further irritate the skin.

5. Consider Air Exposure: While your doctor has advised exposing the glans, it’s important to balance this with comfort and practicality. If you are uncomfortable leaving the glans exposed during the day, consider wearing loose-fitting underwear that allows for some airflow. At night, when you can control your environment better, it may be beneficial to allow more exposure.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you notice increased redness, swelling, or discharge, or if the condition does not improve, it’s important to return to your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your treatment plan or check for any underlying conditions.

7. Diet and Hydration: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your overall health and potentially aid in the healing process. If you have any underlying conditions, such as diabetes, managing those effectively is crucial.

8. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the inflammation has resolved, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity, as this can further irritate the area and potentially exacerbate the condition.

9. Consider Alternative Treatments: If topical treatments are not effective, discuss with your healthcare provider the possibility of other treatment options. This may include oral medications or alternative therapies depending on the underlying cause of the balanitis.

In conclusion, managing balanitis effectively requires a combination of proper hygiene, medication adherence, and lifestyle adjustments. If you have concerns about your treatment or the effectiveness of your current regimen, do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider for further guidance. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific situation and help ensure a swift recovery.
