Persistent urge to urinate?
Since last night, I have been experiencing a persistent urge to urinate, but the amount of urine is minimal.
Shortly after urinating, I feel the urge again.
There is a slight feeling of bloating in my abdomen, and occasionally I experience some soreness in my left flank (after tapping or pressing).
However, there is no pain or burning sensation during urination, and I do not have a fever or blood in my urine.
What could these symptoms indicate?

Persistent urgency to urinate, especially when accompanied by a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying and mild abdominal discomfort, can be indicative of several underlying conditions. Given your description, it’s essential to consider a few potential causes and their associated symptoms.
1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Although you mentioned there is no burning sensation during urination, a UTI can still present with urgency and frequency. UTIs often cause a strong, persistent urge to urinate, and while they typically involve pain or burning, some individuals may experience atypical symptoms. The mild discomfort in your abdomen and the left flank could also suggest irritation or inflammation in the urinary tract.
2. Overactive Bladder (OAB): This condition is characterized by a sudden and uncontrollable urge to urinate, often leading to frequent urination. Symptoms can include urgency, frequency, and nocturia (waking up at night to urinate). OAB can occur without any underlying infection and may be due to bladder muscle overactivity.
3. Interstitial Cystitis (IC): This is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The symptoms can mimic those of a UTI, but without the presence of an infection. IC can lead to a feeling of urgency and frequency, and while it often includes pain, the severity can vary widely among individuals.
4. Bladder Stones or Kidney Stones: Stones can irritate the bladder or urethra, leading to symptoms such as urgency and discomfort. The left flank pain you described could potentially be related to kidney stones, especially if they are causing obstruction or irritation.
5. Prostatitis (in males): In younger males, prostatitis can cause urinary urgency and discomfort in the pelvic area or lower back. It may not always present with classic symptoms like fever or burning.
6. Neurological Conditions: Conditions affecting the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries, can lead to bladder dysfunction, resulting in urgency and frequency.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention for a thorough evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend a urinalysis to check for signs of infection, as well as possibly imaging studies to rule out stones or other abnormalities.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, which can exacerbate bladder symptoms.
- Bladder Training: Try to gradually increase the time between urinations to help train your bladder.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can help manage urgency and improve bladder control.
In conclusion, while your symptoms could be indicative of several conditions, a proper diagnosis from a healthcare professional is essential to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. If symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention.
