The tonsils have yellowish-white patches?
Hello, doctor.
I previously noticed that my left tonsil has a whitish-yellowish spot that seems to have been there for a while.
It doesn't hurt, and I have no other symptoms.
I tried cleaning it with a cotton swab, but there doesn't seem to be any change.
Could this be a tonsil stone? Or what other symptoms could it indicate? Is there a possibility that it could be malignant? The photo I took isn't very clear, but the size is about 0.1 to 0.2 cm.

Hello, the photo is unclear, but based on the description, it may be a small tonsillar cyst.
If there is no significant enlargement or discomfort, you can observe it yourself for now.
If you are concerned, you may visit an ENT clinic for confirmation.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

White patches on the tonsils can be concerning, and it's understandable to seek clarity on what they might indicate. Based on your description, the white or yellowish patches on your left tonsil that have persisted without pain or other symptoms could be indicative of several conditions, with tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) being one of the more common explanations.
Tonsil stones form when debris, such as food particles, dead cells, and bacteria, accumulate in the crevices of the tonsils. Over time, this debris can calcify, leading to the formation of hard, white or yellowish stones. While they can sometimes cause discomfort or a sensation of something being stuck in the throat, many individuals experience tonsil stones without any significant symptoms. The fact that you have not experienced pain or other symptoms is a good sign, but it does not eliminate the need for further evaluation.
Another possibility for the white patches could be a condition known as chronic tonsillitis, where the tonsils become inflamed and can develop white patches due to the presence of pus or dead cells. This condition may not always present with pain, especially if it is chronic rather than acute.
In rare cases, white patches on the tonsils can be associated with more serious conditions, such as oral thrush (a fungal infection) or even malignancies, although these are less common, especially in the absence of other symptoms like pain, difficulty swallowing, or systemic signs of illness (fever, malaise, etc.).
To address your concerns about the potential for malignancy, it is important to note that while any persistent lesion in the oral cavity should be evaluated, the characteristics you describe (small size, lack of pain, and absence of other symptoms) are not typical for cancerous lesions. However, it is crucial to have any persistent changes in your tonsils or throat evaluated by a healthcare professional, preferably an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a throat culture or imaging studies if necessary, to determine the exact nature of the patches.
In terms of management, if the patches are indeed tonsil stones, they can often be managed at home through good oral hygiene practices, including gargling with salt water, staying hydrated, and using a water flosser to help dislodge any debris. If they become bothersome or recurrent, a healthcare provider may recommend more definitive treatments, such as tonsillectomy, especially if you have frequent episodes of tonsillitis or significant discomfort.
In summary, while the white patches on your tonsil could likely be tonsil stones or chronic tonsillitis, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. They can provide reassurance and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
