Foreign body sensation in the throat?
Three nights ago, I choked while eating, and it felt like a grain of rice got lodged in my trachea.
I tried to cough it out but was unsuccessful.
After a while, I no longer felt discomfort, so I didn’t pay much attention to it.
However, last night while I was coughing, I suddenly felt a foreign object in my throat.
I still couldn’t cough it out, and while I was on the bus, I could clearly feel the object moving down with the vibrations, but it didn’t seem to be swallowed and felt stuck in my throat.
I looked online and found that lying flat might help, so I tried that.
However, after sleeping through the night, not only did the foreign object not disappear, but I also felt some inflammation and pain in the same area.
Although the pain subsided after coughing and the object shifted, it is still there.
What should I do?

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology
Hello, if symptoms persist, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Depending on the situation, consider laryngoscopy, X-ray examination, and medication treatment.
Daily life precautions include: do not lie down for two hours after eating, and avoid coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, fried foods, and spicy foods, as these may help improve symptoms.
Wishing you safety and good health.

More Info
The sensation of having a foreign body in the throat, often described as a feeling of something stuck or lodged, can be quite distressing. This condition, known medically as "globus sensation," can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in addressing the issue effectively.
Possible Causes
1. Food Aspiration: As you mentioned, the sensation began after you choked on food. If a small piece of food, like rice, enters the airway instead of the esophagus, it can cause irritation and inflammation in the throat, leading to a persistent feeling of something being stuck.
2. Inflammation or Infection: The throat can become inflamed due to infections (viral or bacterial), allergies, or irritants. This inflammation can create a sensation of tightness or the feeling of a foreign object.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can lead to irritation of the throat and esophagus, causing a sensation of something being lodged. This is often accompanied by other symptoms like heartburn or regurgitation.
4. Muscle Tension: Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension in the throat, which may create a sensation of tightness or discomfort, mimicking the feeling of a foreign body.
5. Structural Issues: Conditions such as esophageal strictures, tumors, or other abnormalities can cause a sensation of obstruction. These are less common but should be considered, especially if symptoms persist.
Suggested Solutions
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help soothe the throat and may assist in dislodging any small particles that might be stuck.
2. Warm Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and soothe the throat. This may also help in dislodging any irritants.
3. Coughing Techniques: If you feel the sensation of something stuck, try to cough gently. Sometimes, a strong cough can help expel small particles.
4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.
5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the sensation persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, severe pain, or breathing difficulties, it is crucial to seek medical attention. An ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a laryngoscopy, to visualize the throat and identify any underlying issues.
6. Manage Anxiety and Stress: If you suspect that anxiety might be contributing to your symptoms, consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or talking to a mental health professional.
When to Seek Immediate Help
If you experience any of the following, seek immediate medical attention:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Severe pain in the throat
- Persistent coughing that does not improve
- Signs of infection, such as fever or swollen lymph nodes
In summary, while the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can be uncomfortable and concerning, it is often manageable with home remedies and lifestyle adjustments. However, persistent symptoms warrant a professional evaluation to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment.
