The tongue often develops white circles?
This year in May, I noticed white circles appearing on the edges of my tongue.
These white circles are raised from the surface of the tongue and are not painful to the touch.
Each time they appear, they gradually expand over time and eventually disappear, leaving the tongue coating completely gone and the surface turning pink.
After a short interval, they reappear, following the same cycle.
The most recent occurrence involved two white circles, which had just disappeared not long ago, and then another circle appeared immediately.

More Info
Understanding white circles on the tongue can be quite perplexing, especially when they appear recurrently and seem to follow a specific pattern. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a condition that could be related to several potential causes. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what might be happening and how to address it.
Possible Causes
1. Oral Lichen Planus: This is a chronic inflammatory condition that can manifest as white patches or circles on the tongue and inside the mouth. It is often asymptomatic, meaning it doesn’t hurt, but it can cause discomfort in some cases. The lesions can appear and disappear over time.
2. Geographic Tongue: This benign condition is characterized by irregular, smooth, red patches on the tongue, often surrounded by white borders. The patches can change location and size, leading to the appearance of white circles. It is generally harmless and does not require treatment.
3. Candidiasis (Oral Thrush): This fungal infection can cause white patches on the tongue and inside the mouth. While these patches can often be scraped off, they may also present as raised areas that do not easily come off. If you notice any discomfort or a burning sensation, this could be a possibility.
4. Leukoplakia: This condition involves the formation of white patches in the mouth that cannot be scraped off. It can be caused by irritation, tobacco use, or other factors. While leukoplakia itself is not cancerous, it can sometimes be a precursor to oral cancer, so it’s essential to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional.
5. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, certain foods, dental products, or medications can cause localized reactions in the mouth, leading to the formation of white patches or circles.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: The most crucial step is to consult a dentist or an oral specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may take a biopsy if necessary to rule out more serious conditions.
2. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Good oral hygiene can help prevent infections and irritations. Brush your teeth and tongue regularly, and consider using an antibacterial mouthwash.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain foods or dental products are causing irritation, try to eliminate them from your diet or routine to see if your symptoms improve.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a record of when the white circles appear, how long they last, and any associated symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.
5. Dietary Adjustments: If you notice that certain foods trigger the appearance of these circles, consider adjusting your diet. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support oral health.
6. Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate many oral conditions, including lichen planus and geographic tongue. Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or other relaxation methods may help reduce stress levels.
Conclusion
While white circles on the tongue can be concerning, many causes are benign and manageable. However, it is essential to seek professional advice to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Remember, your oral health is a vital part of your overall well-being, and addressing any concerns promptly can lead to better outcomes.
