Sudden erectile dysfunction..?
Hello, I would like to ask the doctor: I have a habit of masturbation, doing it about three to four times a week from the age of 15 until now (I am currently 29).
Recently, I have noticed that the odor of my urine has become stronger, and I tend to experience nocturia (frequent urination at night), which makes me feel like I might have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
This has been going on for about two years.
In the past, when I was intimate with my partners, I could easily achieve an erection just by holding hands.
However, I have had difficulty with ejaculation during intercourse.
After each encounter, I feel a sense of weakness near the left side of my abdomen, and I am not sure why.
Before this, I was still masturbating, and I felt that the frequency was normal, and my erections were also normal.
My last sexual encounter was at the end of last year.
Recently, I met a new partner, and during our intimate moments (last week), I was able to maintain an erection at first.
However, after about 10 minutes and changing positions, I experienced complete erectile dysfunction for the rest of the night (which has never happened to me before, and it scared me).
What should I do about this? I never expected to experience such a sudden loss of erection, and it has really affected my confidence.
How could this happen so suddenly?

Dr. Cai Zhuorong reply Urology
At the age of 29, it is indeed possible to experience a gradual decrease in erectile hardness.
There are many potential causes for erectile dysfunction, including fatigue and stress.
Other organic causes may require further diagnosis.
If the symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult a urologist.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be a distressing experience for many men, especially when it occurs suddenly and unexpectedly. Understanding the potential causes and solutions is crucial for addressing this issue effectively.
Causes of Sudden Erectile Dysfunction
1. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and depression can significantly impact sexual performance. The pressure to perform, especially with a new partner, can lead to performance anxiety, which may result in difficulties achieving or maintaining an erection.
2. Physical Health Issues: Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases can affect blood flow and nerve function, leading to ED. Additionally, prostate issues, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can cause urinary symptoms and may contribute to erectile difficulties.
3. Hormonal Changes: Low testosterone levels can affect libido and erectile function. Hormonal imbalances can occur due to various factors, including aging, stress, and certain medical conditions.
4. Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity can contribute to ED. These lifestyle choices can affect blood circulation and overall health, leading to erectile difficulties.
5. Medications: Some medications can have side effects that include erectile dysfunction. If you have recently started a new medication, it may be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: The first step in addressing sudden ED is to consult a healthcare professional. They can help identify any underlying medical conditions, perform necessary tests, and provide appropriate treatment options.
2. Lifestyle Modifications: Improving your overall health can have a positive impact on erectile function. Consider adopting a healthier lifestyle by:
- Quitting smoking
- Reducing alcohol intake
- Engaging in regular physical activity
- Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
3. Manage Stress and Anxiety: Since psychological factors can play a significant role in ED, finding ways to manage stress and anxiety is essential. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and counseling can be beneficial. Open communication with your partner about your feelings and concerns can also help alleviate performance anxiety.
4. Consider Therapy: If psychological factors are contributing to your ED, therapy or counseling may be helpful. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can address negative thought patterns and improve sexual confidence.
5. Medication Options: If lifestyle changes and therapy do not resolve the issue, your healthcare provider may discuss medication options. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (such as Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra) are commonly prescribed for ED and can help improve blood flow to the penis.
6. Follow-Up: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
Conclusion
Experiencing sudden erectile dysfunction can be alarming, but it is essential to remember that it is a common issue that many men face at some point in their lives. By understanding the potential causes and seeking appropriate solutions, you can effectively address this concern. Open communication with your partner and healthcare provider is key to finding the right approach for you. Remember, you are not alone in this, and help is available.
