There is a small red bump on the inner side of the lower lip?

Hello doctor, I spent the whole day yesterday eating, drinking, and having fun.
When I got home late at night, I noticed a small red bump in the middle of my lower lip, near the inside where my mouth closes.
It doesn't hurt or itch, and today it seems to have shrunk a bit.
What could that be? Will it heal on its own? Do I need to apply ointment or see a doctor?

Hello: If there is no pain and it gradually decreases in size, you may observe it yourself for now.
However, if it does not improve, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist for examination.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

The red bump you are experiencing inside your lower lip could be attributed to several potential causes, including but not limited to mucoceles, minor trauma, or even a benign cyst. Given that it is not painful or itchy and seems to be decreasing in size, it is likely a minor issue that may resolve on its own. However, let’s delve deeper into the possible causes and treatment options.

Possible Causes
1. Mucocele: This is a common condition where a salivary gland becomes blocked or damaged, leading to a fluid-filled cyst. Mucoceles often appear as painless, soft bumps and can occur on the inner lips, cheeks, or floor of the mouth. They may fluctuate in size and can sometimes resolve spontaneously.

2. Minor Trauma: If you’ve been eating or drinking, it’s possible that you inadvertently bit your lip or irritated it in some way. This can lead to localized swelling and redness, which may resolve without treatment.

3. Benign Cysts: These can form in the oral cavity and are usually harmless. They may appear as small, red bumps and can vary in size.

4. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, an allergic reaction to food, dental products, or other substances can cause localized swelling or redness in the mouth.

5. Infection: Although less likely given the absence of pain or discomfort, infections can also present as bumps in the oral cavity. If the bump were to become painful, swollen, or show signs of infection (such as pus), it would warrant further evaluation.

Treatment Options
1. Observation: Since the bump is not painful and appears to be decreasing in size, it may be best to monitor it for a few days. Many minor oral bumps resolve on their own without the need for medical intervention.

2. Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent infections and promote healing. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and keep the area clean.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain foods or dental products may be causing irritation, try to avoid them until the bump resolves.

4. Topical Treatments: If the bump becomes bothersome or shows signs of irritation, over-the-counter topical treatments designed for oral use may provide relief. However, avoid using any products not specifically designed for oral use, as they may cause further irritation.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the bump does not improve within a week, becomes painful, or shows any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional or a dentist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Conclusion
In summary, while the red bump inside your lower lip is likely a benign condition that may resolve on its own, it is important to monitor it. Maintain good oral hygiene, avoid irritants, and consider using warm salt water rinses. If you notice any changes or if it becomes painful, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
